SWU sets up title showdown with UV in CESAFI basketball
By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated September 17, 2012 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras terminated defending champion University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters in convincing fashion, 70-56, to advance into the finals of the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

Thus, the Cobras of celebrated coach Raul “Yayoy” D. Alcoseba arranged a titular showdown with the University of the Visayas (UV) Lancers starting next week.

In the juniors division, the UV Baby Lancers kept their title defense alive despite absorbing a huge 81-96 defeat at the hands of the top-seeded Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles.

UV's loss created a three-way tie with the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats and the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons on identical 1-2 win-loss records.

It was the Baby Lancers who advanced into the championship round for obtaining the highest quotient of 1.088 followed by CIT-U with 0.981 and CEC with 0.939.

In the collegiate battle, the Cobras, who knocked the Lancers out in the semifinals in a fight-marred game last season, last met in the finals when the CESAFI was still known as Cebu Amateur Athletic Association (CAAA) back in 1996.

The Cobras led all the way and used a blistering 13-0 blast bridging the third and fourth and quarters to rip the game part. Joseph Nalos drilled in back-to-back triples to start the final period and then 6-foot-6 Cameroonian center Justin Aboude completed consecutive three-point plays to push SWU ahead by 19 points, 64-45, at the final 6:54 mark of the contest.

Nalos paced the Cobras with 15 points as they also welcomed the return of Bonifacio Guillena III from an injury on a bright note.

Guillena and Aboude finished with a dozen markers apiece as they ended their semis campaign with a 2-1 slate, enough for them to earn the right to face the mighty UV Lancers in the best-of-five finals.

Cabrera fired 17 points for the Webmasters, while Quinton Brian Hereula added 15 points in a losing cause.

    The scores

    SWU (70) - Nalos 15, Aboude 12, Guillena 12, Bregondo 8, Mbala 7, Casquejo 7, Arong 4, Ortuyo 3, Dedace 1, Goloran 1
    UC (56) -Cabrera 17, Hereula 15, Wagas 7, Gomez 6, Mohammad 3, Cueva 3,Sealana 3, Quilantang 2 (FREEMAN)

Webmasters, forge finals date with UV

    UV-SWU FINALS SET
Cobras dethrone two-time defending champion UC Webmasters, forge finals date with UV
    By Jonas Panerio

Cebu Daily News 8:18 am | Monday, September 17th, 2012

The finals match-up that everybody is dying to see is finally coming true.

This after the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras returned to the championship round after defeating the two-time defending champions University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 70-55, in the semifinals of the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The win by the Cobras gave them a 2-1 (win-loss) card in the single round-robin semis and it catapulted them to the best-of-five finals series, where bitter rival the University of the Visayas (UV) await.

SWU made it to the finals last year but fell short in five games against the Junemar Fajardo-led UC.

The Cobras got off to great start and led the rest of the way, thanks in part to the return of Bon Guillena, who has missed all but one game this season because of a groin injury.

He made his first two baskets and scored eight of his 12 points in the first half, which ended with SWU on top, 37-23.

Still, there were tense moments, especially in the third canto, where SWU saw its 16-point lead sliced down to just five, 45-40, after a trey by UC rookie guard Kido Cabrera.

But SWU refused to blink and retaliated with a basket by Cameroonian Ben Mbala, a three by Jestoni Casquejo and a buzzer-beating floater by Monbert Arong that restored a 52-40 lead heading to the final stanza.

SWU’s Joseph Nalos hit a corner three on the first possession in the fourth. On the next trip down, Nalos hit another one from the opposite corner that put them on top, 58-40. UC last threatened at 45-68 but SWU’s other Cameroonian import Justin Aboude shut that rally down with back-to-back three-point plays for a 64-45 lead with 7:35 left.

Nalos scored 10 of his 15 points in the fourth canto to lead SWU. Aboude had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Cabrera led UC with 17 while Brian Heruela, was held to just 15.

In the juniors division, the reigning champions UV Baby Lancers lost to the undefeated Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, 81-96, but still made it to the finals by virtue of their better quotient against the Cebu Institute of Technology-University and Cebu Eastern College.

CEC upset CIT-U, 83-78, to create the three-way tie at 1-2 along with UV. UV ended up with a quotient of 1.08, better than CIT-U’s 0.98 and CEC’s 0.93.

In the other no-bearing seniors semis game, UV downed USJ-R, 69-58, to remain flawless entering its finals showdown with SWU.

    Epic finals

    By Rommel C. Manlosa

THE Southwestern University Cobras will relive the rivalry that dates back to the ‘60s after booting out defending champions University of Cebu Webmasters, 70-56, at the close of the semifinal round of the 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Basketball tournament held at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

The way the Cobras played for the final spot showed glimpses of an exciting best-of-5 championship series for the title against the University of the Visayas Green Lancers that will start on Sept. 25.

The last time SWU and UV faced off for the title was during the 1996 Cebu Amateur Athletic Association (CAAA) finals, a series that was marred by a free-for-all.

The Cobras showed no relapse from their 84-76 loss to the Lancers last Saturday as they took control as early as the first five minutes of the game.

Meanwhile, the Lancers were hoping to stay unbeaten this season in a non-bearing game against the University of San Jose Recoletos at press time last night.

The game marked of the return of SWU’s fearless shooter Bonifacio Guillena, who was sidelined since the first game of the season because of a pulled muscle injury.

And coach Raul Alcoseba picked the right time to field Guillena as he made an impact right away, scoring 12 points to help the Cobras contain the Webmasters early.

UC could only threaten the Cobras within four points, 27-23, at the 3:31 mark of the second quarter after leading 5-4 early in the first quarter.

Joseph Nalos’ back-to-back triples at the start of the fourth quarter put the game away for good as SWU built a 58-40 at the 9:09 mark of the final period. And it didn’t take long for the Cobras to log the biggest lead of the game at 19 twice, at 64-45 with 6:54 left and at 68-49 with 4:56 remaining to secure the game.

Nalos topscored for SWU with 15 points and Justin Aboude also scored 12.

Kido Cabrera topscored for the dethroned champs with 17 and Quinton Brian Heruela struggled with 15 points.

Meanwhile, the Sacred Heart School-Atene de Cebu Magis Eagles will return to the high school finals for the third straight year after stamping its class over defending champions UV Baby Lancers, 96-81.

UV’s loss created a triple tie situation after the Cebu Eastern College Dragons defeated the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildkittens, 83-78, in the game.

The three teams finished the semifinal round with 1-2 cards.

UV has the highest quotient and took the second slot to the finals with 1.088. CIT-U got the second highest with 0.981 and CEC was at the last place with 0.939.
