Hmmm... as far as I can tell, Malazarte's article is really a good argument that Iloilo is the real Queen City.
First of all, I don't think we should equate the term "Queen City" with the notion that it is the most economically advanced, etc., etc. outside the capital city. Queen cities around the world are not known to be such because they are second to the capital. For me, seeing how overpopulated and dirty Manila has become, I do not want Cebu City to be known as being "second to Manila" because in many ways it is even better than Manila.
Does New York City consider itself Queen City next to Washington D.C.? Does Busan call itself Queen City because it is second to Seoul? I don't think so.
So if the Ilonggos have a legitimate claim to being the Queen City because no less than the Queen of Spain called her so, then let's end the debate and let Iloilo be the Queen City. I for one am proud of the name "Cebu" because it has the same root as the Malay word for "FULL IN STOMACH" indicating that it was THE center for trade and the most prosperous kingdom in pre-Spanish times (unknown to many, "Sugbo" is a Tagalog invention and the story behind it apocryphal, that's why I prefer to call myself Sebuanhon instead of "Sugboanon", unsa ta, gi sugba?).
Let's call Cebu City "CEBU CITY" the BEST CITY IN THE PHILIPPINES, and forget all this Queen City BuSiness.Last edited by dubioz; 05-07-2011 at 03:14 PM.
