Better pa the Universal Language will be adopted as our National Language para wa'y lalis.

And it will improve further our literacy in the language (we are one of if not the most literate in the English language in Asia right?) Yup. Maay pa Eninglish nalang ta tanan. Our national language I mean.

And for the national anthem pwede katong "Land of the Morning" (Child of the Sun Returning) or pwede Star Spangled Banner kaha, dugangan og usa ka bitu-on ang US flag.

@biddle, though honestly i think in better in english than in filipino/tagalog/bisaya... i wouldn't want to make english as our national language... it's like giving away my soul... the last shred of my heritage.

Ang problema kasi, hindi tayo nagkakaisa... we always make an issue of our differences, porke't tagalog ka o cebuano o waray o kahit sino... kung puwede lang sana, let's just obey the law for just the sake its the law?!

Why oh why make it such an issue?

Do we need to take a debate for that since filipino tagalog was said to be the national language so let it be..........................lisod baya basahon ang bisaya ha..........unsaon na lang kung ma bisaya ang sibika at kultura or social studies og ang filipnio wika at pagbasa......na unsaon na lang.............mamalik ta og eskwela ani kay ang curiculum ma usab sa Filipino cebuano.......

Wrong again. One of the important criterium to consider as dialect is mutual intelligibity. Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialect

@windshear, bro i do appreciate the correction... we could have an intelligent and thorough debate on the meaning on ENGLISH words such as 'dialect' and 'language'.. but honestly what will be the point?! It's moot when it comes to this thread...

All i'm trying to say, why make this such a big issue?! Is this really an issue worth discussing?!

To just simply communicate... that's the pulse of it all.

yeah right! and is Boy Abunda and Cristy Fermin not enough for our lessons to communicate in Tagalog?
the big issue is why do the government spend a lot of taxpayer's money (including non-Tagalog taxpayers) developing and cramming the 'national language' into our heads at school when it wouldn't be of any help whatsoever in developing skills or finding a job later (except kung gusto ka mo-apil sa makeover contests sa ABS-CBN).
the big question is, WHAT FOR? for national symbolism? who needs it? it doesn't even symbolise the linguistic diversity of our country, in fact it's detrimental to the existence of other dialects.
and spare us from the 'unity' crap some people are pushing. unity comes to people who respect each other, not to those who impose anything on each other.

if our country can't live without symbols, the 'sign language' best represents the Philippines. lipay pa ang mga amang nga gitagaan sila importansya

assuming you are cebuano, your statements are quite contradicting. or do you mean that tagalog and cebuano are from the same heritage? tell me more about it.
as far as I know, except in the modern times, what is common to both (same with Ilonggos, Ilocanos...) is that they have been colonized by Spain and forged into a synthetic nation for the convenience of domination. before that, they existed as independent kingdoms of different lineages, customs, and especially the languages which up to now the difference is still very distinct. how can we consider them as coming from one heritage when 'langgam' in tagalog is still crawling while in cebuano is already flying, 'kumot' there is cozy while here it's pinchy, and 'libog' here is a little confusing while it's pretty much sexually arousing there.
they can never be one. either, one has to die in sacrifice for the other or they can both exist independent of each other.
it's not too late to realize of what we really are. that we are different, and should come to terms with that fact. or we can live in denial and forever wondering what's wrong with us filipinos we can't get our acts together. realizing our difference doesn't necessarily result to hating each other. instead, we can start from that premise upon which we'll build our laws, government , and our nation in general.
