Opposition admits Arroyo ‘one damn lucky’ president

WITHOUT using the “b” word, opposition leaders yesterday conceded that President Arroyo is indeed a lucky woman, as a number of factors are likely to dampen protests against her in the coming weeks.

The protest ranks—made up so far mostly of students and workers—are expected to thin out as people get caught up in the final exams, Holy Week, graduation—and even Manny Pacquiao’s big bout on March 16.

The summer break is also expected to break the momentum of a school tour that whistleblower turned anti-government crusader Rodolfo Lozada has launched.

Congress adjourns March 12 for a month-long recess, and most lawmakers will be headed out of town.

For this reason, the Senate will hold marathon hearings on the lingering corruption and bribery scandal hounding Mrs. Arroyo on March 11.

“Gloria [Arroyo] is just damn lucky,” said Renato Reyes, secretary general of the leftist Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, who said it would be difficult to get enough people to attend a March 14 protest rally at the Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila. “We will be lucky if we can muster at least 10,000 protesters.”
