How the San Miguel Season Failed

1. Very Slow Start. As proven this conference, not even a defending champion can save you from an atrocious start to a conference as the Beermen did this season. Starting at 0-8, it is difficult to get a semblance of rhythm and consistency on the later and crucial part of the season. While the format really is downright stupid (They called it "classification" to save faces)--- where even the last team after the initial round has a possibility to appear all the way to the Finals--- and will give a chance to the underperforming team to "just turn it on" when it matters most, San Miguel was just too beat up and embarassed to get some quality wins. Sure, SMB did win those Do or Die games, but the pressure is just too much if you have to do it on an "every other night" basis.

2. Who to blame this very poor start? We could start with the injuries to Don Don Hontiveros, and to an extent Olsen Racela's, but it is clear that outside Olsen this team has no leadership-- and yes, that goes against the coaching staff too. Jong Uichico (locked in for years, according to sources) just do not command that respect, or has the motivation abilities that other coaches have.

What's worse is that this team is loaded with veterans, but neither them can step up to the plate and assume that leadership role.

3. Old school vs New Breed of talents in the PBA. Classic case of being left out in the basketball revolution. While other teams started using running and fast paced basketball to their advantage, maybe not fully but incorporating that running game to their style, SMB was stuck in the old traditional way of playing.

You may argue that this team is full of veterans, thus "old legs" and that this team has no chance in a running game. Point taken, but eventually you have to instill a running game in the system to make you a more versatile team.

Which leads us to..

CHAMPIONSHIP

On a final note, with still over 2 months to go (March 5 is the start of the next conference.) but if anything this will let the SMB management think and rethink about the composition of this team, let's see if the bigwigs budge and actually make those changes--- a move this team has been very allergic to.

namiss nako ang SMB-Coney Island wars early 90s oi chada kaau ug lineup! Especially sa all filipino

ang coney island naa si patrimonio,codiñera,cabahug,capacio,pumaren etc

sa SMB kay powerhouse! Fernandez,Teng,Samboy Lim,Caidic,Agustin,Calma,Dignadice etc

SMB forever! kaiti lang sila karon guwang naman gud si Racela. If maau iya performance 80 percent daug ang smb sya jud gadala sa team.

Age will have a factor also.... den gi sabayan pa jud ug pagka injured nila ni dondon ug peña early sa conference.... late lang kaau cla naka decide nga ilisan 2 c rico hill oi.... pero kang freeman nga murag bata kaau ug nawng, dali kaau nka ilis.... kung ilang import palang kay naay pgka pareha kang strothers sauna nga motira sa gawas ug mo slash pud, ok unta ilang status karon.... c dondon ug belasco ra ilang tirador sa gawas.... c seigle kay murag concentrated naman cya sa mid range..... dapat naay tirador para mo bira sa depensa pagawas.....

@onins....bitaw bay last time na remember nako katong all-filipino man to mga 1994 nga coney-islands vs smb sa finals....then ang modaog maoy mo represent para sa ASIAN Games sa Hirosima....para nako mao toy one of the best game sa PBA!

@pridi....bitaw bay abi sad gani nako ug ila dayun to ilisdan si hill pero nadugayan pa man.....dugay kaau sila naka decide ba....na mao na ni ron! murag naglisud na noon pagsulod sa quarter finals.....murag lisod na to pangitaon ang pareha ug kalidad sa "the helicopter" naa man pero lisod na kaayu!
