About half the price of gas is due to taxes.

    Customs Duties
    Excise Tax
    VAT
    Corporate Income Tax

@DeathFox: i don't think the president - or any president for that matter - can control directly the trend in fuel pricing. they have very limited control over it, especially with the deregulation law. regarding GMA's so called accomplishment, to quote ERA: "weather weather lang yan". also, i think there was some artificial padding of government financial reports then.

i understand that you are not very fond of the current president, (Abnoy, as you call him), but blaming the oil pricing problems on him is very unreasonable and illogical by any fair measure. mind you, i'm not very impressed with him either but he's doing less harm to the country by being not as corrupt as former presidents. sadly, i consider that quite an impressive achievement nowadays.

@cardo: it seems to me that people in position in the US are one of the root causes -if not the primary causes of the problem. i think it's transparent to anyone that their supposed "war against terror" is actually a "resource war". they are taking control of the oil deposits in the mid-east - by placing "controllable" figureheads in charge over there.

@yacky2006: as i understand it, the oil industry is actually very deregulated. basically, they are setting their own pricing. true, the high cost of fuel is reducing emissions though. thanks, it is an interesting topic. i was really thinking things over and wanted to see what my fellow cebuanos think about this.

@I_dontknow: monopoly is one of the reasons but its not the only reason, i think.

@peewee_toot: i agree it has to do with greed. but then again, we're all "greedy" in our own ways. for example, if fuel prices right now were at 50 cents per litre, wouldn't we all be driving gas hogs and whatnot? regarding greed, i think we need to look at why we are putting up with the greed of these people?

ummm... incase you didn't read my reply... Malacaņang stated they are hesitant to step in and control the prices coz dili nila ma.achieve ilang tax target. So in by saying that, they openly admitted that they are capable of reducing the prices, maybe by a little, but capable of reducing it nonetheless.

but they chose not to coz they implied that collecting taxes (that will probably go into someones pocket) is more important than helping the ordinary citizens who are suffering due to the increase in commodities.

2 events started why the oil prices here in the Philippines sky rocketed. The privatization of Petron and the oil deregulation law.

@DeathFox: whatever steps Malacaņang makes, they still cannot dictate the price of oil. its a global problem, not a local one.

even if Malacaņang stepped in and froze fuel prices, that is just a stop gap measure of the bigger problem at hand. and the freezing of fuel prices itself will create more problems as well. it is not beyond the capacity of the major oil players to reduce our much needed oil supplies. i think we already went through with this during the previous administration. GMA did freeze fuel prices and what happened? she backed down as soon as people forgot about the issue. GMA was full of b.s. posturing in my opinion.

my biggest problem with your posts is your "Abnoy"-blame-game. it isn't even that original and you are echoing the unreasoning opinion of many filipinos - which is blaming the most convenient person to blame and not thinking beyond your personal biases.

to anyone whose interests floats only at the surface of the problem, your argument would seem good. however, if you dig deeper, you'd see that what you are saying is not only wrong but also damaging because, instead of pointing people to where the problem actually lies and thus finding a solution to it by bringing more minds to the problem, you are distracting them with false conclusions.

the thing is what we really need as a country is a "thinking" population. it is actually what any country needs. you are not helping. please change, please help.
