I'm confused about what happened, They had a crash landing and were still able to continue their mission? If the chopper simply had a hard landing then why destroy it? Were the choppers hovering the whole time while the assault took place?

The issue is on humidity and temperature. If they practiced with a fully loaded experimental stealth chopper in arid/cold climates (i.e. northern afghanistan/US), then the humid conditions in Abottabad might have messed with the helo's aerodynamics and max loading, and thus botched a relatively easy hover. Then you have to consider the fact that the helo broke its tail boom upon landing (hit the north wall), thus rendering it incapable of taking off.
