Cristanel Jumola of the University of the Visayas Cebu City placed sixth with an average grade of 88.
Johnrey Aguirre of Sorsogon State College topped the licensure exams with 89.65
They belong to the 625 successful examinees. A total of 1,546 took the licensure exam given last April 17-18.
Ońate said he was “shocked” to learn that he topped the board exam because he didn’t expect it to happen.
He said jokingly, however, that he felt the pressure of the expectations of his school and batchmates to top the board because of his status as “king of engineers.”
“King of Engineers” is a title given to the graduating engineering student with the highest grade in their batch.
Ońate graduated magna cum laude.
“Kung dili ko mu-top, wala na ko’y nawong ipakita sa CIT (If I didn’t top it, I would have no face to show in school),” he said.
Ońate said he prayed very hard. He completed the novena of the Sto. Nino, joined the Sinulog procession, did the Visita Iglesia and went to the Marian Shrine in Simala, Sibonga.
He said he had left to God to decide on his fate because he wasn’t sure how he would fare in the “unpredictable exams.”
Coronado, who has been adjudged CIT-U’s “mathematician of the year,” said the nine-day wait for the results was like a penitence.
“I even deactivated my Facebook account because I was too scared to know about the results. Basta ako, wa jud ko mag expect,” Coronado said.
Cleofe, who graduated cum laude, said he had always wanted to become an engineer.
The school will be giving them cash incentives for their achievement.
It will also pay for the plane fare of Ońate when he travels to Manila for the oath-taking on June 24.
The Visayan Electric Company (Veco) has offered Ońate a job.
“My faculty members are dedicated and they make sure they cover majority of the topics,” Erwin Salvador, chair of CIT-U’s electrical engineering department, by way of explaining the achievement of the school and the graduates.
