i have 3 adult tokays. got them when they are still 2-incher babies last year when the wild female who lives in our dirty kitchen started breeding. I've got to rescue these when I saw them being chased by the bigger tokays. one even got half of her tail eaten by a bigger juvenile. nagka shortage na siguro pagkaon sa amo compound that time sa kadaghan tokay namuyo dinhi sa una...hurot gud ang mga roaches and mice.

karon nangawala na man ang kadaghanan. they started disappearing one by one. either nadakpan na to sila sa mga tokay poachers, or some are possibly killed by cats roaming our compound at night.

now these 3 are already 10 and 12-incher beasts...and are laying eggs. they are still growing since the male can reach 14-15 inch maximum. gipahimuan gyud nako sila ug ilang glass/aluminum arboreal enclosure.

they are indeed a challenge to tame. sa una, I would just pick them from their individual enclosures without much of a hassle since naanad na sige nako handle everyday. but everysince I placed them in this glass communal enclosure with driftwoods and hides, they started becoming defensive na pud.

plano unta nako mag controlled release sa wild sa mga new babies...but with the current development na daghan manakop ug tokay to sell to these "tokay hoarders" who are offering ridiculously big amounts...I'd rather hold on na lang sa to these babies. I will just start my "advocacy project" of releasing tokays to selected areas when the "coast is already clear" of poachers and those who see nothing but the quick big bucks that they can get from these tokays.

I'm just afraid that when the "smoke" finally clears down from this frenzy, the remaining wild tokays that we have in the wild may just be a thing of the past.

this is "fury" the very first tokay I rescued from being eaten by bigger tokays in our dirty kitchen

this is "fury" 3-4 months later

their arboreal enclosure. the one on the lower right is the other female I rescued as a hatchling when
her tail was grabbed by a bigger tokay in an attempt to eat her. the one on the upper left is the male. "fury" is hiding somewhere behind the drift wood.

but take note, the Tokay Gecko is NOT a BEGINNER'S pet lizard. If you want to venture into keeping geckos, you better start with the more mild tempered and more colorful Leopard Gecko.

Captive-Bred specimens are also readily available. Anyway, almost 100% man sad of all leopard geckos circulating in the market since the mid 90s are captive-bred.

the tokays can shift their body color from dark to light and vise-versa to camouflage themselves in their surroundings. hence, it's just a misinformed claim sa ubang tao nga naay light-colored ug almost black tokays sa wild.

color mutations or morphs can also occur in the wild, but it is more readily controlled and propagated in captive breeding though.

below are some sample tokay morphs developed by New England Reptile Distribution (NERD) in the US:

    leucistic morph

    super red morph
