April 29, 2011
THE national archery team made its presence felt in Asian Archery Grand Prix by bagging two gold and three bronze medals in Vientiane, Laos.
Sydney Olympian Jennifer Chan led the charge of the national squad with two gold medals. She connived with Rachel Cabral and Joan Tabanag in topping the women’s 50-meter team event.
They scored a total output of 230 to secure the country’s first gold medal.
Chan added another gold as she ruled the individual event of the 50-meter category.
“We’re happy with the performance of our team. This is the best campaign in years so far by our local archers,” said Philippine National Archery Association Secretary-General Terry Lim.
Tabanag chipped in two bronze medals in the individual compound class and mixed event with partner Fermin Barnachea.
Barnachea also grab a bronze medal in the men’s individual event.
The Filipino archers’ campaign in the Asian Grand Prix was part of their buildup for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games slated in November in Indonesia.
“It’s a good indication for a much better showing in the coming international events such the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia,” added Lim.
Philippine Olympic Committee President Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco hailed the team’s sterling performance in the Asian meet, “It will really inspire our young athletes to strive more and trained hard for the coming international events,” said Cojuangco.
