football because of the Azkals and only because of the Azkals. they don't even know the rules of the game or how it's played etc. they care only that the Azkals are sariling atin.

when the Azkals slow down(or some of their players get into showbiz) the sport will sink back into obscurity from the general public again.

I think it ok cheering for the Askals because of the country . At least there's something to be proud of living in a sorry country .

Everyone on Facebook suddenly became a football fan during the World Cup.

Well , they have the right support the team who's representing the country they originated . Most people in Canada are from different parts of the world , so that's understandable if they want to cheer . The area I live in right now are mostly of German descent , during the World Cup last summer , everyone were putting on Germany flag on their car , front lawn , and windows . Most of my friends' statuses on Facebook were about the World Cup , twas annoying seeing statuses of how they're proud of their ethnic background but it's the right time to be proud of it , I guess .

If a Filipino cheering for a non-Philippine team like crazy , and don't know anything about soccer ... that's a huge facepalm . Filipinos are bandwagoners . They cheer for different country every World Cup like whores (even in basketball) . So it's not really surprising .

my first love was basketball (elementary), then got into football (high school) and was more successful winning tournaments (college). karon balik sa basketball kay kapoy na man sige dagan sa dako nga field. hehehe...

Football is always going to get the better out of Basketball, in any argument, Football will win..
It's simply the most popular and best sport in the world..
Only thing is, we Filipino's were raised, and already accustomed to Basketball so much that as much as it's a sport, it's more of like our national sport, there is no Barangay in the Philippines where you will not be able to see a Backboard and a Rim hanging on it...

But we should always approach things in an open minded way..
Although we wont be seeing Big, FIFA Certified, 60+K Capacity Stadiums in the Philippines anytime soon...
but we should realize that we have a bigger and brighter future in the field of Football...
there are Countless leagues in Football which our Good Filipino Players can very much qualify in..
Coz in Football, Height doesn't matter and that is the big thing that we can count on..
In Basketball.. if your 6'2 and don't know how to dribble the ball then noone is going to have interest in you.. in Football, nothing of that matters, what matters is your discipline, your will to play and of course some skill which we Filipinos are very good at... We tend to have the talent and the skills.. and not the Height... such a Cliche in Basketball....

We have a very bright future with Football if the government and the media play their cards right..
but im not counting on it.. Studio 23 just got a Deal with PBA, and no way GMA or ABS-CBN is going to cover Football games...
It is non stop playing for two halves, 45 minutes each.. how the hell are they gonna get commercial in it?
no time outs, no free throws.. no commercial breaks!
well they can place their commercials on the field but what company would risk on that?

REALITY CHECK : Filipinos won't be successful in basketball . Period . Basketball doesn't fit the standard body structure of the Pinoys ... Too short , some have long torso , but small legs ... and overweight - in other words not fit to run around .

Smart Gilas will get crushed once they start playing against any Western teams . Same to the current PBA All-Shits too . Y'all think Smart Gilas is a good experiement cuz they beat other countries ? Let me tell ya , they beat mostly soccer-centric countries that's why they win ... on a close game .

Filipinos has a better chance of making big in soccer and baseball . But not Basketball . I'm not trying to rain on your parade , I'm just stating the obvious .
