    Melvz,

Basically, DNS is a system that resolves your hostnames into IP addresses and vice-versa. Your preferred DNS server should point to your primary server where you want your host to first consult whenever it needs to query. If your host can't query the preferred DNS server (e.g., it's offline), it will consult your alternate DNS servers one by one until an accessible one is found.

bay melvz, u can put there the DNS as given to you by your ISP... but if naggamit ka router, better use the router's ip instead. so meaning imo gateway & dns pareha ra...

    OT :
addntl question lang for the networking experts, pareha ra ba na sya, if butang nako ang real DNS kaysa ang router ip ang ibutang? same effect lang ba?

    TY

It depends on what kind of router. If your router has a built-in DNS server or if it has the capability of forwarding DNS requests to other machines, then it's possible to use your router's IP address. If there's none, then you need to set-up your own.

BTW, I think melvz is trying to find a way to resolve his own hostnames into his own private IP addresses. Unless he has direct access to his ISP's DNS servers themselves, he can't use those servers since they don't have any data of his own set-up. What he can do is to set-up his own DNS server and let non-resolvable queries forward to his ISP's DNS servers. =)

melvz: i think you're using a standard DSL line sa imong internet cafe, which is dynamic ip add ang i.hatag. so sa imong router..i know that imo lang na gi obtain ip address para everytime you turn on your router..tagaan ka ug ip add... (ni assume lang ko ha).

so sa imong LAN..ni start gyud ka ug 192.168.1.2 and etc...cos .1 man ang router. (ni assume gihapon ko) if wala kay server with a DNS service gi butang, then ang router's ip add imong butang sa imong DNS1 sa imong wokstations. no need to put another ip add sa DNS2. =)
