What are you trying to do here, Doc? If a person falls asleep due to carbon monoxide inhalation, that person won't merely "fall asleep". He/she goes into a coma and he dies.

They'd have to somehow cover the entire village with tarp in order to achieve that. This way the tarp traps most of the fumes and is surely inhaled by every single villager instead of dissipating into the surrounding air.

Carbon monoxide needs to be released in an enclosed area for it to be lethal.
