RP has one of the most expensive electric rates in the world. maglisod na og compete ang atong mga furniture exporters with china kay mas mahal man atong production cost. I think its time we put the BNPP to use, we already paid for that and almost all experts agree that it is safe to operate.

seriously, what other alternatives we have that can power the whole country?
Aber, how do you propose we get rid of the radioactive waste? Sige mog push ug nuclear energy, but none of you have pointed out how nuclear waste should be disposed. Even if the BNPP is safe to operate, there's still the problem of waste disposal--something which no country has solved.

Do you seriously think the Philippines can manage nuclear waste? It takes at least 10,000 years for the toxicity to come down to safe levels. Wala man ganiy recycling initiative diri, diretso na nuon ta ug nuclear energy?

With all due respect we must admit that we have a very poor track record in terms of public safety. How many overloaded ferries have sunk? How many urban fires have burned out of control? How many times has waste destined for a landfill ended up somewhere else?

Even if all the funds allocated to a Nuclear plant were actually spent on that plant would you trust the fail-safe devices? Do you have faith in our emergency response teams? Do you think the radioactive waste would be properly disposed of (very expensive) or do you think someone would take shortcuts?

so how do you explain the millions of tons of greenhouse gases bombarding our atmosphere by coal/oil power plants? isnt that a waste can we recover from the ill effects of global warming? pila pud na ka years mobalik?

even coal ash is more radioactive than nuclear waste.

i would rather see waste put on barrel and stored somewhere than spew out on the atmosphere and haul out by trucks and dump it elsewhere. there methods that had been applied to dispose nuclear waste, in the future this can be solve.

Hmm.. You have some interesting comments on your reference article.

1 - The article's title was misleading. Gram for gram, nuclear waste is much more radioactive than fly ash.

2 - The 'scientific study' compared a measured exposure with an estimated exposure. Hmmm. Not what I'd consider good science.

3 - The issue of exposure is, further, a false one. Hardly
anyone (at least who knows what they're talking about)
is afraid of being near a properly functioning nuclear reactor. They're clean places, carefully monitored, in the main, and so on. And coal-fired power plants are, in fact, nasty places, and dirty.

The problem with the comparison is that if the coal-fired
plant is struck by lightning, or a bomb, or a plane, or catches on fire, or breaks in half in an earthquake, your exposure will be mostly to particulate pollution, and for a few hours, during which you may leave the area.

Conversely, if anything happens to a nuclear power plant to cause an accident, the risk of immediate exposure to a dangerous or lethal dose of radiation is fairly high.

Even operator error can be critical with a nuclear plant -- think of Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, that reprocessing accident in Japan a few years back. Human error becomes disproportionately risky with nuclear installations.

4 - The article doesn't address a REAL question that I've asked some high-level, knowledgeable nuclear proponents and opponents -- What is the radiation release in fly ash
compared with the radiation in nuclear waste, expressed on a kilowatt to kilowatt basis?

Now THAT would be something interesting to find out.
Now how sure are you that PI won't engage in illegal dumping? We can't even manage our landfills and segregate our waste properly. I'm all for nuclear energy, but only until such a time when we're actually ready for it.

no nukes in the philippines for me. too corrupt, no contingency plan.

it is not the radiation that will kill us, it is the corruption.

if we were an advanced country and we have the money to maintain it, then i would consider.
