we agree on the operational definition of what is 'overpopulation' which of course is a condition of unsustainability of the need of a population that results in an increase of the said population.
both definitions that you have given are complex enough; the first being more complex than the two.
we have this mistaken idea man gud that overpopulation simply means 'daghan ug tawo', and limits the definition of the term strictly within the confines of population count. this idea is simplistic and does not offer us anything new rather than how many people are there. what is worse, it actually limits our perception of what overpopulation is and when we can call something as 'overpopulated' which incidentally is included in the very definition of overpopulation.
with the definition that you have provided, this is not necessarily just about the size of the population. so we can never limit our views merely on the reduction of the population. it is inherent in the definition that you gave that overpopulation is relative to the capability of a certain location(or the institutions overseeing the population and the area) to provide for the needs of that population. this automatically injects an economic dimension to the problem of overpopulation.Originally Posted by Apo ni Barabas
we have to remember that we can only call a place as 'overpopulated' if the resources in the area can no longer sustain the population. even if there is a large number of people in an area, as long as the resources that can be gathered is enough, that does not technically render it 'overpopulated'. but in a simplistic view where only the size of a population is seen as basis for overpopulation, natrurally, an area with many people is deemed as 'overpopulated' even if they can sustain themselves.
i hope you do not get the idea that i am agruing that the country is 'not overpopulated'. i think it is because we cannot sustain the population with the current economic policies being implemented. but even if these economic policies be reversed, the population growth rate will negate its effects. that is why i am advocating for the use of contraceptives and family planning now. along with that, is of course, the multi-lateral solution attacking the problem of overpopulation in many sides.

we are talking about '*** education and family planning' here, which does not necessarily correpsond to academics being taught from grade 1 to college.Originally Posted by cyclops
go to the communities of the urban and rural poor and listen to the many misconceptions, myths and fears they have against artificial contraceptives and you'll see just how badly we need this kind of education... the kind of education that the church is against... especially when it deals with atrificial contraceptives.
the comparison that kurdapya gave was a comparison done in context to their religious faith if indeed it is that big a factor. it is a commonly made error that climate has anything to do with population growth rate. the welfare system is quite irrelevant in the problem of overpopulation really, unless if you post the 'welfare system' as a deterrent factor against having too many children.Originally Posted by cyclops
this is funny, but it assumes too much. it is as if this is the scenario that happens most the time which causes people to produce many children. and what about those societies which have been observed to 'overpopulate' but does not necessarily observe the catholic faith?Originally Posted by cyclops
indeed, if the scenario that you present is true, the stereotype that you present of the Filipino as 'highly educated' does not jive in well with the portrayal here.
i am a psychology major. admittedly there is a psychological axis in the problem of overpopulation. but even books on psychology raise their hands and admit that overpopulation mainly is rooted on varying degrees of economic, political and cultural factors. other disciplines (anthropology and sociology) agree with this.
