PASSAGE SOUGHT FOR MANDAUE JEEPS
MANDAUE City Mayor Jonas Cortes yesterday said he will request Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama to let Mandaue City jeepneys pass through the streets of Cebu City.
Cortes said he will also ask the Cebu City Council to reconsider the ordinance barring Mandaue City jeepneys since the change of route affects the economic activity in Mandaue.
Cortes said he will request Rama to release the impounded Mandaue vehicles “until such time that a consolidated ordinance will be agreed.”
He said the issuance of different ordinances by cities only complicates the problem and that local officials should meet together and lay out route plans.
Cortes said he wasn’t informed when the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) started impounding the vehicles and imposing fines on operators.
He also clarified that he has no plan to block the Cebu City jeepneys whose routes will pass Mandaue saying “we will settle this in a civil way.”
Last Wednesday, transport stakeholders had a dialogue with Cortes. While Mandaue City proposed modification of the PUJ routes within the city, he said many drivers are asking for another 30-day extension on the implementation of the new routes.
