    Default Re: Knee problem,

@Biodegradable: Hello! Share lang ko sa akong experience and what I learned from it.

I was diagnosed with a partial tear of my left ACL and chondromalacia patella on both knees. I was 20 when I was diagnosed. I have a history of playing soccer, mountain bike riding (trails), and backpacking. Back then, I saw a PT and was diagnosed with Tendonitis (simple!), so rest and ice application. The pain got worse to the point where I could not bend my left leg, and barely do so with my right. I was referred to a physiatrist and an MRI was ordered. Only then was it discovered that I had an ACL tear. I was then referred to a knee specialist here in Cebu and this doctor discovered that I had knee instability and chondromalacia patella on both knees. His recommendation: complete rest and lifestyle change. I was not willing to accept that. I researched on the Internet and found out that a muscular imbalance can aggravate a knee injury. This imbalance was corrected with gym work. A year later, I had it checked again, the ortho said that the instability was gone, but the partial tear of the ACL remained, so the risk of a complete tear was still there (ligaments tend to heal poorly). Now, I am back to hiking, MTB riding, and I am still lifting. The drawback is that I cannot do high impact activities like running (running is high impact on the knees, especially if you have a gait issue), and jumping. I still wear knee braces/supports when I feel the demand on my knees might be great.

    My point:
    1) Get the MRI one way or another. That is the only way to conclusively diagnose the issue. The knee is one, if not, THE most complicated joint in the body, with numerous injuries possible. It is expensive, but it goes a long way to addressing the issue.

    2) REST, REST, REST, REST

    3) Ice application if swelling and pain is present

    4) See a PT for therapy. Dont do what I did, addressing the issue just by myself. I might have saved 3 months had I decided to invest with PT.

    5) If you are overweight, lose weight. If not, avoid heavy loading for the first few months of recovery.

    6) If you decide to lift, DO NOT do a bodybuilding type program. DO NOT use the leg hyperextension machine, and DO NOT emphasize training your quads. Most people's imbalance is caused by a weak/dormant posterior chain. The glutes, hams, and lower back muscles should be trained to fire properly. Believe it or not, squatting 3 x a week helped me to stabilize my knees. (careful though, improper form can worsen your injury or cause new injuries).

    Good luck with your recovery!
