Yes, that's true. But you need to get a 1-2year contract, mostly 2 years. It might seem cheaper but in the long run you'll pay the same. I was going to get a contract for the Desire HD from a top mobile network here in EU(I'm in EU now), but I noticed that I will actually pay around the same amount within 2 years. Well, maybe not exactly, you can still save maybe 10-30 Euros with a contract. And it goes the same for iPhone and other smartphones as well.
If you can get a cheap iPhone contract, you could even get a cheaper Android contract. Anyway, I was supposed to get a contract but my being FILIPINO didn't allow me to.
So I bought the regular open phone.
