actually i asked this question to a priest many years ago (i was very young then) and he told me the same answer. the catholic church had given consideration to those who committed suicide could not be on their right state of mind on that time that the said act was performed. i guess the situation of the late general reyes just reopened up this topic whether or not people who did it should be given burial rights.
when in doubt ask the right questions to the right people. lisud ning mag comment and wala diay ma aware nga naa diay

Ako, dili ko in favor pamisahan is Angelo Reyes. Ngano man lagi ang uban mga suicide victims, dili man misahan sa Catholic Church. Now, kay sikat man ug influential person, e bend na ang rules dayon sa Church.
About giving him 21 gun salute or something, tradition man gud na sa AFP to give honors to a deceased comrade, pero option na sa family if magpa conduct ba sila or dili.
if you were on his side during the senate hearing with this fat monkey (jinggoy) lavishly displaying his arrogance through the way he interviewed the late former general and also this former junior officer who only had a mutiny as the biggest decoration of his military life (trillanes) disrespectfully uttered the words "the accused has no reputation to defend", i wonder how low it could pull your morale down? not to mention the hearing is publicized to millions of filipinos nationwide and there might even be foreign eyes watching as well. reyes was robbed of the opportunity to defend his dignity.
ang pamisahon unta nga pari katong na headline ron nga nakapusil gamit ang air gun
Why not just allow Catholic Burial rites to all...
I don't see how any person who committed suicide can be in "the right state of mind".
