Default YM(Yahoo!) Virus/Scam/Phishing Circulation Forecast Thread

I decided to open this up since this is getting really alarming for me. Maybe some of you are getting it and are getting concerned now. The majority of us uses YM so a lot would be affected if you will fall as a victim of scam and viruses.

Lately, I have received PMs from 5 different people that goes like this:

Guy: hi
Me: oh hello there
Guy: i just took an IQ test here.. pretty cool
Me: how about no
Guy: got a 113 lol... I thought I was smarter than that
Me: how about no
Guy: you should see if you can do better than me... http://<REDACTED>com/?invitecode=7cl8j02690 if you can ill give you twenty dollars lol
Me: how about no
Guy: try beating me... I bet you cant haha
Me: how about no
Guy: take it now while i take a shower lol
Me: how about no
Guy: ill be back in a few after im all fresh
Me: how about no
Guy: BRB, let me know your score when im back!
Me: how about no

When you click on the link, various things may happen. From infecting your computer, or phishing your data. This is alarming because I have never received this much amount of spam in my YM. If you're going to google around on what this iq test thing is really about, the results are not conclusive at all. Not telling what the virus/worm is about and all sorts.

There's also a "Is this your pic on facebook?" spam going around, so be careful.

If you happen to have received this kind of message lately, post here so we can tell how bad this problem has circulated.

Same here. Some of my contacts started to appear online and sent me the "hi" message. Every time i sign in to mobile I receive like more than ten of these. Even though i reported them as spam they still keep coming up.

I admit, when the first one came in, I really got fooled. When I clicked on it, the page that displayed was google. I can say it was legit because my google account was logged in. Maybe it redirected to google because the iq test thingy is actually isolated only for US residents (as what I've googled around). But what I'm worried is that it may have hijacked my google account and ym account which is I know, far-fetched, but we don't know.

I already changed my YM account password. But not my gmail. I can't think of a new extra strong password yet so that's gonna be a while.

The problem is really well socially engineered. For someone like me who has a good background with information security, it did fool me. What more damage can this trickery do on normal people?

Here's someone who's account was even deleted by the infiltrator I had a previous account "Motherpuppet" was the screen name and it says I closed it but I didn't. How do I get it back? - YouTube Help

I'm not only experiencing YM spam lately, even the 2 forums I administer right now is being flooded by spam.

In my part, if my email is deeply exposed on the web and to think that it is already on spammers DB, I never open unsolicited emails nor respoding IM chats from unknown people. Responding or clicking on those emails will give them a hint that your account is active. Though I will not say that I never been tricked, this is just my current defense against spam/phishing attacks. I sometime received emails from my contacts who rarely send me emails (sound suspicious or maybe their accounts were compromised).

Thus, I encourage everyone to help fight against spams by clicking "Report Spam" button prior deleting it on your spam folders. This is applicable in Yahoo! mail and Gmail.

IMO, Gmail has better anti-spam filters compared to yahoo. Strong password will help though.
