We sat down with Ely Buendia and the members of his new band Pupil last Tuesday at I.O. inside ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City and the first question we asked him was, how does it feel that there is already a tribute being paid to the Eraserheads for its contribution in the local rock music industry?
Ely, who we must say looks so much better now, even younger-looking than during the time we first launched him at Eheads, says "it still feels surreal" and smiles. "Im happy," he adds, even as he acknowledges the great success of the tribute album just released.
So why was he not present at UP that night? Smiling, Ely said, "baka sumabog ang UP sa sobrang init." It is no secret that Eraserheads disbanded under a cloud of much internal chaos in 2000. The boys have yet to patch things up between them although Ely says he is at peace now.
He doesnt regret anything, he reveals, not even the disbandment of the group. "Im happy to have this new group to work on. It feels so much fresher and newer. Siguro kung hindi kami umalis sa Eheads dati, laos na laos na kami ngayon," he said meaningfully.
The pronouncements simply say everyones dream of a reunion concert for The Eraserheads happening anytime soon is just not going to materialize. "At least not now," Ely told us politely.
When complimented on his aura of calmness and peace, Ely says "salamat kay Dianne" referring to his partner and the mother of his five-year-old,very handsome son Eonboy. The beautiful Dianne also acts as Pupils manager. She was described by Ely as "my drink, my rock, my breath, my fire" in the album inlay of Pupils "Beautiful Machines."
Pupil, whose album sales reportedly ranks 2nd to the "Ultraelectromagneticjam" in Tower Records, is composed of Ely and guitarist Yan Yuzon, bassist Dok Sergio, and drummer Boks Jugo and its album is a homecoming of sorts for Ely in his home studio, Sony BMG Music. "Ive come back like a prodigal son. I thank the BMG bosses, Rudy (Tee), Vic (Valenciano) and Ciso (Chan) for not losing faith in me," he ended.
