this is a late reply but...but i'm not really into the whole technicality and all.
i saw this list also...Andy Gill of u.k. post-punk band GANG OF FOUR was not included and to think he influenced The Edge with his skeletal, staccato, aggressive guitar playing.
anyways....it did include kevin shields, tom verlaine, and no-time-for-lead guitar crap johnny ramone. yup,yup,yup.....hey...they omitted johnny marr of the smiths

okay ra man ang list at least dili one sided pero kataw anan lang si Jack White sa white stripes no. 17 while Van Halen at 70, Steve Howe at 69 and Kim Thayil at 100. lupig pa niya si Brian May at 39. My goodness okay ra ang list pero gi arrange unta nila og maayo.

I agree with you vince, van halen makes his guitar playing look easy even if it aint, and jimi page his les paul hanging down on his knees.

here's the crap list maybe you're wondering what i'm talking about. can you believe that kurt cobain is better than angus young or tony iommi. even steve morse wasn't even in the list while he was voted by the guitar player magazine as the best guitarists for five straight years. guitar player mag is not just about rock music it features all kinds of music genre. I bet kirk hammet would be celebrating now that he's better than randy rhodes,vai, satriani, mick mars.

Kurt Cobain is very good and influenced a lot of people. Simple Guitar playing is great guitar playing...

^^ Kurt Cobain, no doubt is a good song writer and quite influential as well. He even redefined the sound of the nineties. But having him in the Top 20 Greatest Guitar Players, ranked higher than the likes of Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, R. Blackmore, etc. is simply HILARIOUS!

This is the wrong list for you. The list is about guitarists who caused change and contributed something to their artform.

Van Halen is a great guitarist. He influenced technique, tone, design, etc.

Jimi Hendrix influence music itself.

Can't you get that?

If you can't, then you never will and you are appreciating music for the wrong reasons.

Wow... I have to admit that I find some of the entries on that list cause me some mild stomach distress. BUT, I think I know why we guitarists are collectively having so much trouble with this list: The people who published the list are MAGAZINE people, not GUITARISTS. They are LISTENERS of music with a particular interest in American music culture, not PLAYERS. Their perspective of "influential value" of a particular player is based on an entirely different set of dynamics and criteria. They are able to assign importance to a player who only knows a handful of elementary chords if they feel that the those 3 or 4 chords (in a song) signified a change in a current trend of music. Jack White of the White Stripes?? Eeaghhh...

My advice? #1) ignore the list, or
#2) research all the names on the list (missing something good?)
#3) make your own list and only look at that
