In 2008 civil suit, a man alleged he was abused at age 14 by Skelton, a seminary student, and by Fr. Stallings. in the summer of 1984. The youth was helping Stallings remodel rectory at St. Teresa of Avila & staying in the rectory's attic to avoidlong commute. Case settled 10/09 for $125K. In 1988, he resigned from seminary in MI after pleading guilty to abusing a 15 yr old boy in seminary room. Ordained for Tagbilaran Diocese in Philippines and still working there as of 10/09.

The Philippine Bishops need to act on this. I'm sure Fr. Skelton may have done great things in his work there, but he shouldn't be left in public ministry dealing with kids. They've supposedly known there since 2003. It would have been FAR WISER to quietly retire him from public duty long before now.

The US Bishops made this exact mistake dealing with priests in years past. They hoped if they prayed hard enough, maybe the priest had changed and wouldn't do it again. Most of the time, the priests re-offended doing TERRIBLE DAMAGE to the credibility of the Church.

Guess what? Fr. Joseph Skelton, convicted of sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy in the US state of Michigan, re-surfaced a couple of days ago-- of all places --in Cebu. He led the Praise and Worship portion of the Kerygma Conference 2010 (held at the Waterfront Hotel), which featured preachers like Bo Sanchez.

The name resonated with me, because his name came up early this year when the Vatican global child abuse crisis was still a very hot issue. Check out this article in April: Bishop says he wouldn’t have ordained Skelton.

In the hierarchy of crimes, I think crimes committed against minors has to rank among the most disgraceful, the most cowardly, the filthiest, and the most despicable. I mean, if I was in jail, I could hang out with people convicted of stealing; I can understand the circumstances. I could hang out with people convicted of drug use; again, I can understand why one might do that. But sexually abusing a minor? Stay away from me, dude!

He didn't actually resurface -- he's been here in the Philippines since October 2009.
