Default DVDs released locally by Viva

A list of titles released on bad quality DVDs by Viva is growing and local DVD collectors are noticing it...with anger.

Solid movies like District 9 (which I bought on DVD for about P400) got bad treatment from that distributor. Visual quality is slight above that of VCD quality, full-screen, and poor sounds.

Someone out there was so pissed, this online message was posted at PinoyDVD.com

    Attention: Viva Rep.

I hope you're reading this. I've honestly heard complete strangers tell salesladies at Astrovision, "Kung VIVA yan, hindi kami bibili, naloko na kami niyan noon, pangit." This is due to your lousy 375 full screen, substandard releases. They boycott even your excellent Fox and Disney releases due to your quality issues with your smaller studio releases, since not everyone is savvy enough to read PinoyDVD and know the difference. The automatic assumption of many is Viva DVD = BAD.

You're losing business in an already small market of buyers of original DVDs. Please do something about the quality of your non-Viva/Fox/Universal releases. It will really make a difference in your sales.

    Thank you.

Thanks to PinoyDVD.com, it's possible to learn if any DVD on the market is worth buying or not.

As for Viva, they are doing a great job by importing DVDs of widely selected Fox titles (X-Men Trilogy, Die Hard, etc.).

As for those bad quality DVDs, they really suck and literally rip-off customers.

Even at less than P400, District 9 on DVD via Viva was a big disappointment for me. It's a good thing I did not buy that disc brand new at P750.

Viva does have its own DVD production facility. The problem is that they just encode VCD digital files into the DVDs, even when it comes to foreign films like Kick-Ass, District 9, etc.

Some more Viva DVDs to avoid (even if they are priced low)

    Marine 2
    Law Abiding Citizen
    Ongbak 2
    Two Lovers
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
    Beyond a Reasonable Doubt
    More than a Game

Anyone who feels cheated by Viva should send complaints via fax to

DVDs imported by Viva are very good.

DVDs made locally by Viva are pathetic.

We DVD collectors should be lucky that Viva chose to import, not produce locally, the Extended Collector's Edition of Avatar.

Avatar Extended Collector's Edition DVD (Region 3) was imported by Viva. At P999, it's a great deal. Now if only Viva would stop screwing its consumers with crappy, local produced DVDs.

Do yourself a favor by learning from this info online.

DVDs released by Viva which are on DVD5 and as such, are inferior in terms of picture quality, audio quality and content when compared to their counterparts in Region 1 (USA, Canada) countries. Only non-local films are included.

    Marine 2
    More than a Game
    Beyond Reasonable Doubt
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
    Law Abiding Citizen
    Ongbak 2
    Two Lovers
    Halloween II
    Paranormal Activity
    The Rebound
    Red Cliff
    Young Victoria
    1408
    The Grudge 2
    The Messengers
    Miss Potter
    Adaptation.
    Chocolat
    Halloween
    Ali
    3:10 to Yuma
    Sleuth
    Why Did I Get Married?

Note: There are many more crappy Viva DVD releases to be listed here.

How to spot a crappy, locally-made Viva DVD release of foreign flicks (releases to avoid)

Over a year ago, lots of consumers got angry over the poor quality of the Twilight 2-disc DVD set they bought for P750, which was locally made by Viva.

The anger was so loud, Viva replied. Their response below:

    To TWILIGHTERS / TWILIGHT FANS:

As most of you are aware, the 2-Disc DVD Special Edition of TWILIGHT was released in the Philippines this past weekend. The 1st disc contains the full feature or movie in its entirety. The 2nd disc contains the DVD extras or DVD add-ons licensed to us by the international licensor. Such content are confined and limited to the rights granted to us by Summit Entertainment. The release of the Twilight video is in accordance with the Licence Agreement between Viva and Summit Entertainment.

As we are not privy to the international licensor's arrangements with its various licensees worldwide, we have no control over the contents and timing of their own DVD releases. Rest assured, we endeavored to bring the movie to the local market at the earliest possible time. We were the 2nd country in Asia to release the movie in theaters. On video, we released almost simultaneous with the title's US video release.

As a company engaged in video distribution for the last 25 years, rest assured that our TWILIGHT 2-Disc DVD Special Edition provides unbelievable value to local Twilighters, Twilight Fanatics, and movie fans.

    Thank you for your support.

It was so insulting for Viva to ignore the details as to why people complained: full-screen VCD quality visuals, poor sound, etc. At P750, Twilight DVD was a big ripoff.

As for New Moon, it was a great thing the DVD was IMPORTED instead of being produced locally with Viva's crappy standards and procedures.
