A comparison of different approaches in Stock Market:

Intention ----------- Trigger for Action --------------- Expectation
Speculation -------- rumors, hot tips, etc. ------------ immediate large returns
Trading ------------ personal market analysis --------- immediate returns
Investing ---------- to match a financial goal --------- appreciation over time

@Dako ang Imo - so, unsa may trigger nimo for entering the stock market?

As far as my knowledge brings me, being an investor and being a trader brings in different advantages.

If you intend to become an investor, you go for long term gains. The day to day fluctuations of the stock market will never matter to you because all you care about is the gain after at least 5 years. If you want to become an investor, opt for blue chip companies. Blue chip companies are very stable companies and they aren't going down in 5 years or even a decade. Though they aren't spared from daily fluctuations, in the long run, they are rising.

If you intend to become a trader, either being a day trader or swing trader, you hold your shares for short period of time and you want to take advantage of the fluctuations meaning that you'll consistently buy low and sell high. It really sounds so ideal but in reality, the risk is much higher in trading than in investing. You need to understand and know how to analyze the market fairly well and more importantly, not to decide based on emotions.

For beginners, I suggest that you get into investing. The reason why a lot of people fail in the stock market is because they are trading hoping to get lucky. Stock trading isn't gambling and for many people, they think that it is because they rest their hopes to chance.

Investing is less risky but trading could bring more growth if done well.

@jamex - directly into stocks, not yet as i haven't had the time to study the ins and outs yet... more on basic pa lang ako-a... but my MF-structured investment (VUL) is stock-based. So, basically, i'm learning through there pud... I started it like 3 years ago... and i'm happy with the result... i've been wanting to start investing directly into stocks, i haven't found the time pa lang jud.. nag-open na gud ko ug citiseconline account but too bad, wala pa jud ko ka-start investing jud... ganahan ko mu-try on how it is to trade... ang thread about trading is quite lengthy na, so medyo taas2x ang akong apason ug basa... hehe

Bro, maybe this will give you an idea on things.

Warren Buffett currently 3rd wealthiest man in the world, INVESTS in stocks, his mentor Benjamin Graham discourages Trading Stocks.

By the way first is Carlo Slim Helu, followed by Bill Gates then you have Warren Buffett...^_^
