MANILA, Philippines – The six-member Jr. NBA Philippine Team is set to arrive Friday after completing a five-day trip in New Jersey where they get the chance to meet and play with NBA legend Ron Harper.
Harper spent an hour-long session with Mark Jayven Tallo, Marvin Roland Muller, Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw, Carlo Escalambre, Aldrin Fegidero and Michael Jay Javelosa – the six lucky Jr. NBA Philippines campers.
Last Monday’s basketball session with Harper at the IZOD Center, home of the New Jersey Nets, was the reward given to the six after topping the Jr. NBA Philippines camp from November 2008 to March 2009.
Harper, who was part of the Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen-led Bulls that won six NBA titles, told the boys to have fun and inspired them to bring out their best in the various aspects of the game.
“Go out to play and have fun playing. Because if you love playing, you’re going to be good," Harper said.
Harper even let each of the six young cagers to wear his NBA championship ring and playfully challenged them to beat his score with the winner getting the ring as the prize. “Whoever scores higher gets the ring. I’m laying it on the line."
Interestingly, Harper’s wife, Maria Pizarro-Harper, is Filipino who hails from the Bataan, north of Manila. His wife also plays basketball and coaches girls’ basketball teams that compete in New Jersey.
“I know how amazing Filipinos are when it comes to basketball," Harper said. “I’d really like to go to the Philippines soon."
Harper was with his wife and two sons, Dylan Robert and Ronald, Jr., when he met the entire Philippine delegation led by US Jr. NBA coach Frank Lopez and local Jr. NBA coach Elmer Cabahug.
Lopez and Cabahug also joined in the learn-and-play session that was scheduled specially for the visiting young Filipino cagers. – GMANews.TV
