What to buy, Socket 939 or Socket 940?

I understand the difference between the two is DDR2 support, am I correct?
I'm looking at a AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU and can't decide on the socket type.
Can you guys give opinions and suggestions on what socket type to buy?

I'm upgrading from a Socket A, and if I choose a Socket 939 upgrade I suppose I'd be able to use my old DDR 400 RAMs.

DDR2 is not the main difference for both.
Socket 940 requires the use of ECC / Registred RAM type and also s940 can run in Multi processor (SMP) mode as compared to socket 939

if it support DDR2 then its the new 940 or AM2 not the old socket 940

the old socket 940 only support ddr with ecc

otis, going back to you question,

you should go for AM2 (940) if you want to live in the future.. all new AMD desktop procs will use AM2 - Sempron, X2, FX...
sell your DDR and buy DDR2
