    Tournament of the Philippines on
Manila Standard Today -- Tournament of the Philippines on -- 2010/june/9

THE union of two of the country’s premier amateur basketball leagues official start today through the Tournament of the Philippines that kicks off at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Four of the nine teams from both the Philippine Basketball League and Liga Pilipinas will see action in the inaugural of the meet’s 1st leg that serves as dry run for the eventual merging of the two leagues.

Ascof Lagundi squares off with Trace Laguna in the 1:30 p.m. curtain raiser, while M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Cebu takes on Ani-FCA in the main game at 3:30 p.m.

In between games is the formal opening ceremony with Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan invited to do the ceremonial toss.

A day before the opener, officials of the two leagues – chairman Ding Camua and executive director Butch Maniego for the PBL and Chief Executive Officer Noli Eala and technical director Perry Martinez from Liga Pilipinas – expressed at the weekly Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum their optimism about the success of this rare partnership.

“This is one of the best things that ever happened to Philippine basketball,” Eala said in the public sports program held at Shakey’s in UN Avenue and presented by Outlast Battery, Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corporation and Shakey’s.

“We believe that the planned merger is for the best interest of basketball and players in particular. We’re looking forward to a tremendous competition among all the best amateur clubs in the country.”

Noting the many differences between the PBL and Liga Pilipinas, Camua said the unification will provide the answer whether both leagues “could jive together.”

Other than Ascof Lagundi and Ani-FCA, Cobra Energy Drink is another team from the PBL joining the tournament, while General Santos City, Misamis Oriental, Mandaue and Taguig comprised the cast from Liga Pilipinas.

The tournament is adopting the Liga Pilipinas format where teams earn corresponding points in their respective finishes in each leg. A playoff system will be held following the nine-leg phase.

Maniego said Cebu, handled by veteran coach Yayoy Alcoseba and bannered by ex-pros Stephen Padilla, Marlon Basco, Bruce Dacia and new acquisition Warren Ybanez from reigning ASEAN Basketball League champion Philippine Patriots, is considered as the title favorite on account of the Ninos’ remarkable 21-0 sweep of Liga Pilipinas’ Conference III tournament last year.

Hosting the second leg is General Santos City, which might field in boxing superstar and newly elected Sarangani congressman Manny Pacquiao as he is included in the team’s roster as player-owner.

I don't mean to downplay the level of basketball in Cebu, but it's the naked truth. Ikaw ba 6-9 nya ang mag-bantay nimo 6-3 o 6-5 ra height, syempre pabor gyud kaayo ka. I know it was just one game, but if you saw the PCCL game last year between UC and UE, you'd understand what I'm talking about. Dali ra kaayo siya hutdan ug hangin, nya na-contain gyud siya sa frontline sa UE who didn't even have anyone as long/tall to match up against Fajardo. (Yes the UE big men aren't chumps, pero bilib gud kaayo ta ni Fajardo so kaya ra gyud unta kaayo to niya sila Espiritu ug Llagas di ba?)

To Fajardo's credit, he has a natural feel for the game, unlike Slaughter who probably only started playing serious ball when he flew in from the States. Mas kamao mu-lihok si Fajardo, pero kuwang kaayo ug polishing. A good idea would be to have him train under tried and tested big man coach Norman Black. Look at Rabeh Al-Hussaini, who blossomed into a MVP under Black's guidance. Banga man gyud kaayo to si Rabeh, pero ni-improve gyud. I wouldn't be surprised if the Slaughter we see with Ateneo next year will be a very different Slaughter from the one we saw in his MVP year with UV. But back to Fajardo, if he really wants to maximize his tremendous upside, he (and his handlers) should not chain-lock himself in Cebu. He should explore his options and test the waters in Manila where he can face stiffer competition so he can more accurately gauge his skills and so he can better assess his chances in the PBA. Kay kung apiki ra iyang exposure ug experience, he'll still be effective in the PBA, but it'll be tougher for him to learn on the fly in order to become that next possible revolutionary and game-changing big man that we want him to be.

totally agree bro.. i watched greg slaughter against ue before.. guba jd iya duwa.. gi double teaman ni espiritu and pari llagas. nice sd mu coach si norman black. dako kaayo difference the rabeh in his rookie year down to his senior years.. si justin chua pud run sa ateneo naa nai itsa ug low post moves..

one example of big man na sikat kaayo nya flop si samigue eman from um wildcats sa davao. promising kaayo to siya and den second draft pick sa pba draft, den after that , flop na dayun.

PBL, LIGA agree to joint tournament
    (April 29, 2010)

The Philippine Basketball League (PBL), the country’s premiere amateur commercial league and La Liga Pilipinas, the country’s biggest regional league, yesterday agreed to hold its first-ever joint tournament by early June, preparatory to a long-term agreement to merge the two entities.

A Memorandum of Agreement was signed between Chairman Abundio “Ding” Camua of Pascual Laboratoriesand San Miguel Corporation’s Robert Non representing the PBL and Pinoy Basketball, Inc.’s (Liga) CEO Jose Emmanuel “Noli Eala” and witnessed by PBA Chairman Angelito Alvarez and SBP Deputy Executive Director Bernardo Atienza.

Officials of both leagues were happy at getting over all the initial hurdles of coming together after several months of negotiations and finally forging a tie-up that should capitalize on each league’s respective strengths.

Alvarez, who from day one had spearheaded the move to get the two top amateur leagues together said, “This is a great day for local basketball. Not only will this ensure the continued existence of a strong non-amateur league from where the PBA can draw its talents from, this also enables both the PBL and Liga to continue with their programs together.”

For their part, Eala and Camua shared optimism that the differences between the two leagues can be addressed and bridged in the shortest possible time, given that the teams from both leagues are already very anxious to play.

The inaugural tournament is slated to begin on June 5 with anywhere from seven to as many as twelve teams being involved from both leagues.

An Executive Committee composed of Alvarez, Camua, Joaquin “Chito” Loyzaga (SMC) and Virgilio Angeles (Toyota Otis) representing the PBL as well as Eala, Gov. Oscar Moreno (MisOr) and Joe Soberano (Mandaue) representing Liga Pilipnas, was named to oversee the project. Working committees were also formed to accomplish the many tasks that need to be done in the melding of the two leagues.
