US, S.Korea to hold drill
WASHINGTON - PRESIDENT Barack Obama and South Korean leader Lee Myung-Bak agreed on Tuesday to conduct 'enhanced training' and hold joint military exercises in the coming days, after an attack by North Korea on a border island, the White House said.
The two leaders agreed to the war games 'in the days ahead to continue the close security cooperation between our two countries, and to underscore the strength of our alliance and commitment to peace and security in the region,' the White House said in a statement.
Mr Obama assured Mr Lee that the United States 'stands shoulder to shoulder' with its ally after the attack that saw the communist state launch an artillery barrage on a border island, killing two South Korean marines.
Washington and Seoul had earlier agreed to 'coordinate' any response to North Korea after the attack, which sent panicked civilians fleeing the flash-point Yellow Sea island of Yeonpyeong.
Meanwhile, Japan and Australia joined calls on China to use its influence over North Korea to help ease tensions on the divided peninsula.
South Korea's military went on top alert on Tuesday, its troops fired back with cannon and the government convened in an underground war room as tensions on the peninsula rose to their highest in years. -- AFP.
