MAVERICKS: Inside Report: Mavs Spotlight -- Trading places
In order to win a championship, a team often needs for key contributors to sacrifice stardom and for role players to stay ready should their number be called. Jason Terry and DeShawn Stevenson are doing just that for the Dallas Mavericks.
After making the adjustment from award-winning sixth man to full-time starter, Terry was thrust back into a reserve role Monday night in the Mavericks' 89-87 win over the defending Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics. Meanwhile, Stevenson, who had played less than a minute in the only two games he appeared in before Monday night's victory, was inserted into the starting lineup in Terry's place as the first-string shooting guard.
"We've inserted DeShawn Stevenson into the lineup. I'm coming back off the bench now," Terry said after Monday's win. "That's another adjustment we have to make. So, we had a lot of things going on (Monday night), but we stayed focused in on the task and we got the win."
Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle made the switch because the squad's second string struggled to produce offense through its first five games of the season. After watching the Denver Nuggets' reserves outscore the Mavs' bench, 40-19, last Saturday night en route to handing Dallas a 103-92 home loss, Carlisle knew he needed Terry to once again adjust back to coming off the bench.
"(The lineup change) evened out our rotation a little bit," Carlisle simply said of the switch.
"If you ask me, I think JET (Terry) has been playing awesome starting," Stevenson added. "But coming off the bunch, he gives us a scorer and a veteran that knows the offense and will play well. So, I think it was that route."
The move immediately paid dividends, as Stevenson stepped into the starting role with ease even after seeing limited time earlier in the season. Having to guard future Hall of Famer Ray Allen the first time he saw significant playing time this year, Stevenson showed the defensive intensity that Carlisle has fallen in love with, also swishing in two 3-pointers in the opening quarter to provide an offensive spark.
"I thought that he would be a good matchup on Allen to start the game. He's been playing well in practice, he keeps himself ready," Carlisle said of Stevenson. "He hit two threes in the first half. I mean, the guy's a pro. I'm very happy for him. I'm very happy for the team, too."
"It was a little surprising," Stevenson said of the starting nod. "But I've been going hard in practice. And we have a great team. We've got a point guard like (Jason Kidd) and Dirk (Nowitzki) that make you look good out there...As long as you're professional and work hard in practice, good things will happen."
As for Terry, after averaging 19.2 points an outing as a starter, "the JET" produced 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting and 2-of-3 from behind the 3-point line, while showing that he can still be one of the league's top -- if not the top -- sixth man extraordinaire. Terry also led the charge as the Dallas reserves outscored their Boston counterparts, 35-21.
But after early-season success as a starter, Terry admits that he was conflicted about returning to the bench. Ultimately, No. 31 knew it was in the best interest of the team.
"(Making the switch back to a sixth man) is something that's tough," Terry said. "I prayed on it early (Monday), and it's tough -- especially when you've had success. I've had a good run the last five games, and then being thrust back off the bench is an adjustment...Hey, for the betterment of this team, I'm here to do it.
"We were lacking something, whether it was energy, whether it was scoring or maybe both. But I was able to provide a spark."
Now, with Terry once again providing instant offense and energy off the bench and Stevenson locking down the other team's best perimeter scorer while occasionally knocking down a three or two, the Mavs believe they have the right rotation to build momentum through the first month of the season.
And after edging out the Eastern Conference's best squad from a season ago, Terry says that the team's confidence level is soaring sky-high, believing that he and his teammates can compete with anyone on any given night.
"We knew it was a big win for us...I think our confidence is at a new high right now, winning this one at home against a great team in Boston," Terry said. "It speaks volumes about what we were able to do."
