Shalani Soledad’s Debut In Willing Willie Beats TV Patrol In Mega Manila Ratings

Based on the AGB Nielsen Philippines Mega Manila ratings, Willing Willie tied with 24 Oras of GMA 7 during Shalani Soledad‘s debut as Willie‘s co-host. Meanwhile, the new TV Patrol featuring the comeback of Noli de Castro and Korina Sanchez seemed to be not interesting to some Filipino viewers.

Willing Willie and 24 Oras both got 11.6% Mega Manila ratings while the new TV Patrol only got 10.7%.

'Willing Willie' continues to shakeup competing news programs

When “Willing Willie” was finally unleashed on TV5, with its weekday shows airing on the same time slot normally occupied by news programs on the other two major networks, a shakedown seemed inevitable. Indeed, with host Willie Revillame banking on his massive popularity from his former show on ABS-CBN, “Wowowee,” it was also expected that his viewers would actually follow him not only to the new channel, but also on his new time slot.

Undeniably, though, changes to the news programs on both ABS-CBN and GMA soon followed—making it almost impossible to think that this musical chair of sorts with all these news anchors had nothing to do with the bold decision of TV5 to pit Revillame’s new game show against the news, of all things.

In a “Paparazzi” report on Nov. 7, with what it called a “daring move” on Revillame’s part, it was declared that the show had begun to change the primetime viewing habits of the people and that it had already affected both “TV Patrol” on ABS-CBN and “24 Oras” on GMA-7. The report also raised the issue on how it had affected three of the news anchors on the said programs.

With the return of Korina Sanchez—who took some time off from her TV and radio hosting duties not only to get married but to campaign for her husband, Mar Roxas, when he ran for Vice President in the last national elections—and former Vice President of the Philippines, Noli De Castro, to “TV Patrol,” both the news program’s anchors Karen Davila and Julius Babao were left on the wayside.

For “24 Oras” anchor Mel Tiangco, meanwhile, it was said that she had to cut her Australian vacation short so she could come back to prepare for what could be considered a renewed clash of the news titans, so to speak. It was also mentioned in the same report that “24 Oras” would, in fact, have a change in time slot as the two major networks not only battle each other on that hour, but also a highly publicized game show on a third network that is fast giving them both a run for their money.

While “Paparazzi” didn’t get to interview Davila and Babao—or Tiangco, for that matter—they nevertheless also pointed out that there have been rumors of Davila negotiating with TV5 while she was “supposedly on vacation.”

However, the “Paparazzi” report also added, “But insiders are quick to say that she was apparently turned down by the Kapatid network.”

As for Babao, it said that it was reportedly Babao’s wife, Christine Bersola, who was the one negotiating for him with other networks.

Cristy Fermin, one of the show’s hosts, opined that all this happened so the other networks could scramble to face off with Revillame’s new show on TV5. She also claimed she knew Karen indeed talked to TV 5, but that she still had no idea what came out of the talks.

Regarding Babao, Fermin also mentioned, “wasak ang boses niya sa kanyang pagpapasalamat” when he apparently got a text message asking him why he wasn’t even given a chance to say goodbye to the viewers of “TV Patrol.”

TV5 ‘flattered’ by ABS-CBN news anchors shakeup

TV5 Entertainment and Creative Services head Perci Intalan finds it “flattering” that the station’s strategic approach to the competition is said to be causing a shakeup in the news programs of one rival network, ABS-CBN.

“What we said about changing the TV audience’s viewing habits is finally coming true,” Intalan told the Inquirer on Friday.

TV5—also known as the Kapatid network—has a new game show, “Willing Willie,” which airs from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on weekdays. It competes head-on with the news programs “TV Patrol” and “24 Oras” of ABS-CBN and GMA 7, respectively.

TV5’s evening newscast, “Aksyon,” airs at 6 p.m.

Marissa Flores, senior vice president for news and public affairs of TV5’s other rival, GMA 7, commented: “Our observation is that it is largely the audience of ‘TV Patrol’ that ‘Willing Willie’ is eating into.” She pointed out that “‘24 Oras’ remains ahead in Mega Manila ratings.”

ABS-CBN recently announced the return of former Vice President Noli de Castro as well as Korina Sanchez as anchors of “TV Patrol” starting Monday night.

Outgoing anchors Julius Babao and Karen Davila were offered to join Ces Drilon on ABS-CBN’s late-night newscast “Bandila,” but Davila is reportedly still weighing her options.

Only Ted Failon was retained as co-anchor for “TV Patrol.”

Meantime, starting Sunday, TV5’s show biz program “Paparazzi” was moved to the 4 p.m. time slot in direct competition with ABS-CBN’s “The Buzz” and GMA 7’s “Showbiz Central.”

Intalan added that TV5’s talent search program “Star Factor,” which used to air at 5:30 p.m., will be on earlier at 2:30 p.m., to be followed by the romantic-comedy series “BFGF” at 3:15 p.m.

Starting Monday, the afternoon newscast “Balitang Tapat” and the entertainment news program “Juicy” will switch time slots. “Juicy,” which will air at 12 p.m., will be pitted against the noontime shows “Eat Bulaga” and “Pilipinas Win Na Win.”

The popular kiddie show “Batibot,” which TV5 now co-produces with the Philippine Children’s Television Foundation Inc., will return on November 27 at 8:30 a.m.
