Police accuse Mayor Fernandez?s son of ramming mayor?s SUV into patrol car | Sun.Star Network Online
POLICE yesterday accused Joavan Fernandez, the Talisay City mayor’s son, of ramming his father’s green Pajero into a police patrol car near the Cebu South Coastal Road (CSCR) early last Sunday night.
The white Innova patrol car, carrying three Talisay City police officials and two field training personnel (FTPs), was waiting at the junction between Barangays Cansojong and San Roque when the Pajero allegedly rammed them on the driver’s side.
It was coming from the Cebu South Coastal Road. Instead of the usual license plate in front, it displayed a special plate marked “Mayor.”
Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO) Director Erson Digal ordered Supt. Henry Biñas of the Talisay City Police Station to file charges of malicious mischief and direct assault against Joavan.
Digal also appealed to Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez, Joavan’s father, to present his son to the police. Joavan remained at large yesterday.
“Dili unta niya tago-taguan (I hope he doesn’t hide Joavan),” Digal said, adding that
the police have been looking for Joavan since Sunday night.
Defense
According to a radio DyAB report yesterday morning, Mayor Fernandez denied his son intentionally hit the police car. He said he knows, from personal experience, that the Pajero’s brakes sometimes don’t respond quickly.
Digal said he ordered the Provincial Investigation and Detective Management Branch to coordinate with Biñas if the latter needs the special unit’s help in the investigation.
He said the Toyota Innova patrol car that was damaged was donated by the Talisay City Government.
Joavan’s actuation, Digal said, is tantamount to disrespect for the people of Talisay, whose taxes paid for the car.
Biñas, in a separate interview, said that when they attempted to confiscate the Pajero, Mayor Fernandez appealed to them not to take his car.
The police chief said he asked the mayor to surrender his keys to him or else, he would call a towing company. Fernandez complied.
Aboard the patrol car during the incident were Talisay City Deputy Police Chief Senior Insp. Ciriaco Larrobis, Inspectors Jose Nilo Abello and Diosdado Malazarte, and two field training personnel (FTPs).
Witnesses claimed they saw Joavan when he rolled down the window on the driver’s side.
No accident
Larrobis, in an interview with reporters, said it didn’t seem to be an accident.
“Intentional gyud to. Kay pwede ra baya to siya muagi sa left or mu-diretso lang. Nganu man gyud nga sa among direksyon man gyud siya muagi? (It was intentional. He could have passed on the left side or proceeded straight ahead, but he went in our direction),” added Larrobis.
The patrol car, driven by Malazarte, was about to be driven to the five cemeteries in the city, after dropping off the two FTPs in the Cansojong Public Cemetery.
The impact badly dented the front left side of the patrol car and almost tipped the vehicle over.
Malazarte was lucky to have moved his left leg far from the car door.
“Na-shock gyud mi ato, kay puerte gyung kalita (We were stunned, as it was really sudden),” said Larrobis.
Seized after the collision, the SUV allegedly fled south toward the coastal road’s exit in Barangay Lawaan I. Larrobis immediately called their police headquarters in Barangay Poblacion for back-up.
A team led by the Talisay City police chief, Supt. Henry Biñas, pursued Joavan until they found the vehicle parked within his compound in the Mansueto Subdivision in Barangay Bulacao at 9 p.m. last Sunday.
Police said Joavan was nowhere in sight.
A police officer, who refused to be identified, said that during the confiscation of the vehicle, Mayor Fernandez told Biñas that the incident was not intentional, and that the brakes of the vehicles may have failed.
The mayor declined to be interviewed.
Complaints for malicious mischief and direct assault will be filed against Joavan today.
