    Ways to Gain Weight Healthily:

    Nutrient-Rich Foods

A healthy diet is packed with vitamins and minerals. Whole grain breads, pasta, fresh fruits and vegetables should be eaten in abundance. Foods with no nutritional value, or junk food, will only increase the amount of unhealthy fat in the body.

    Larger Portions

Eating larger portions more frequently can pack on the pounds. Instead of one helping of vegetables, eat two. Do not skip meals. If you are trying to gain weight, you should eat three balanced meals per day plus two healthy snacks. A snack before bedtime is especially helpful when you are trying to gain healthy weight, drinking fluids 30 minutes before meals or 30 minutes after eating, and to avoid drinking liquids with meals to leave more room in the stomach for the more nutrient-dense foods.

    Healthy Desserts

Healthy desserts can help add weight. Sweet foods are more inviting than bland foods, and desserts can stimulate the appetite. Choose fruit pies over candy bars to add nutritional value to the snack. Other healthy foods that are high in calories and nutrition are nuts, peanut butter, cheese and dried fruits.

    Exercise

Weight lifting and strength training can be added to the exercise routine, and exercising at least three times a week helps gain muscle mass. It is healthier to gain weight by increasing muscle mass than it is to grow heavier with fat. If you are an older person or someone with a chronic medical condition, you should consult your physician before beginning or changing an established exercise regimen.

    Smoking

Smoking acts as an appetite suppressant and it may even increase a smoker's metabolism so that the smoker burns more calories than a non-smoker. Appetite returns after smoking has stopped, and metabolism slows down as well.

    Caffeine and Liquids

Some food and drinks contain caffeine. Caffeine can make a person nervous, and fidgeting burns calories. Decrease the amount of liquids in the diet, especially the ones containing empty calories. Liquids fill up the stomach and decrease the appetite.

    Count Calories

Counting calories is important to gaining weight successfully. Weight gain is only possible when the number of calories taken in exceeds the number of calories burned.
    OTC Products

Several over-the-counter products can help add weight. You should consult a physician before using any of these products to determine if you have a food allergy or are on a medication that may not mix well with these products.
