Terry thrilled about returning to Mavs

DALLAS - True to his word, Jason Terry will return to play for the Mavericks.

Terry and the Mavs agreed on a six-year contract early Saturday morning that's worth approximately $50 million.

"Everybody knows that at the end of the day our goal is to win a championship, and we came close last year," Terry said. "And I truly believe in my future we're going to win one and bring it home to Dallas."

The chances of that happening are better now that the Mavs have an agreement in place with Terry.

"We are very excited that Jason is committed to bringing a championship to Dallas," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said. "Jet is a key to this team. He is one of the most clutch players in the league."

Prospect from Ghana is Mavs' man of intrigue

GW-ex Mensah-Bonsu has versatility, desire and chance to impress

The first question to Mavericks summer-camp hopeful Pops Mensah-Bonsu is what position, exactly, does he play?

"Basketball," he answers without hesitation. "What position does Josh Howard play? He may be a small forward, but he can guard power forwards, big guards, he can handle the ball.

"I'm a power forward. But in a couple years, I think I could be a small forward."

In the much shorter term, he's on the Mavericks' list of favorites to earn a spot in training camp next fall. Mensah-Bonsu, 22, is a native of Ghana.

But he grew up in London until he was 15, moved to the U.S. and attended George Washington for four seasons. Minor knee surgery interrupted his senior season, which explains why he wasn't drafted last week.

When he wasn't, the Mavericks acted quickly to get him on their summer team. To this day, Mensah-Bonsu doesn't understand how he went undrafted. He has no guarantees from the Mavericks. They have offered him only the chance to impress.

Mensah-Bonsu – his full name is Nana Papa Yaw Mensah-Bonsu – is listed at 6-9 but is closer to 6-7.

Daniels dealt as Mavs pick up a Pacer

Marquis Daniels never fit into Avery Johnson's system. Now, he won't have to.

The Mavericks dealt the three-year veteran to the Indiana Pacers for forward Austin Croshere in a trade agreed to earlier this week. The deal will be made official next Wednesday, when 2006-07 contracts go into effect.

Daniels, a 6-6 guard, had been everything from a starter to a backup to an afterthought during his three years with the Mavericks. Since Johnson took over as coach, it was too often the last one.

"If we were going to leave Dallas, this is where Marquis wanted to go," said Glenn Schwartzman, Daniels' agent. "He'll definitely get an opportunity to play a lot there, and the Mavericks hopefully get a piece that fits for them.

Pacers win by an inch...

Pacers get an atheltic Daniels to boost up their backcourt but he eats a fair amount on the team's salary since he's got a 3year $19million purse.

Mavs get a decent backup that can boost up their 3-spot, has expiring contract which0 adds salary flexibility next year but he's getting old and the Mavs might drop him off later next year.

^^ I think this is just a money move by the Mavs. since Keith Van Horn became a FA starting July 1, Croshere can play his role for this year and may eventually be an FA himself after next years off-season. another player off the Mavs roster with a considerable salary.

Pacers to acquire Armstrong from Mavs
Indiana to send Johnson to Dallas for veteran

Anthony Johnson appears to be on his way to joining Austin Croshere in Dallas.

The Indiana Pacers are on the verge of finalizing a deal with the Mavericks for veteran point guard Darrell Armstrong in a sign-and-trade deal, according to people with knowledge of the situation. Mavericks forward Josh Powell is also believed to be involved in the trade. The deal is pending league approval, which could happen as early as Monday.
Johnson, who spent three seasons with the Pacers, was a steady contributor despite roles that ranged from third-string point guard to starter. He averaged 20.0 points, 5.2 assists and 5.0 rebounds while outplaying New Jersey's Jason Kidd in the Pacers' six-game, first-round playoff loss last season.
Trading Johnson, who said the team's "culture has to change" at the end of last season, avoids a point guard controversy with Jamaal Tinsley. Pacers president Larry Bird said Tinsley is "as good as you're going to get" if he is healthy in his season-ending news conference. Tinsley has battled injuries each of the past three seasons.
Sarunas Jasikevicius is also a candidate to be traded in the Pacers' crowded backcourt. Rookie James White and newly acquired Marquis Daniels can also play point guard.
The acquisition of Armstrong, a 13-year veteran, would give the Pacers a veteran voice in the locker room. He has averaged 10.1 points and 4.4 assists in his career. Powell, a rookie last season who went undrafted in 2003, averaged 3.0 points and 2.2 rebounds in 37 games last season.
This is the second offseason trade for the Pacers, who sent Croshere to Dallas for Daniels.
Shooting guard Fred Jones could be the next Pacer traded. The Toronto Star reported today that Jones is headed to the Raptors. The deal could be finalized in the next couple of days.

The perfect fit
Rookie has impressed Mavs coaches with his skills and knowledge

SALT LAKE CITY -- Streaking down the sideline, the ball came his way and Mavericks rookie Maurice Ager knew exactly what to do.

A couple of smooth dribbles, a couple of perfectly timed steps and he was off. It didn't matter that Andre Brown, a 6-foot-9, 230-pound power forward on the Spurs' summer league team, was between Ager and the rim.

The ball was going through. Hard.

After the slam that brought the crowd at the Salt Lake Community College Center to its feet, eliciting the kinds of oohs and ahs normally reserved for Kobe or McGrady or Wade, the brash rookie didn't dance.

No fist pump. No primal scream. No shimmy.

Sure, his teammates made plenty of noise from the bench, blending in with the spontaneous chorus of "Did you see that?" Ager simply got up, and almost in a what-did-you-expect fashion, walked to the line and nailed his free throw.

No big changes as Mavs pick up pieces
Coming off Finals trip, team hopes additions upgrade three positions

The Mavericks left the really big moves to others this summer.

A team that had a 2 3/4-game lead in the NBA Finals decided it liked a lot of what it already had. Much will look the same for 2006-07, from Dirk Nowitzki to re-signed free agent Jason Terry, from Josh Howard to the revolving, evolving center rotation.

But the changes the Mavericks made could be the difference between another Finals trip and a second-round exit. With 14 roster spots filled, the Mavericks have indicated most of the summer work is completed.

"We haven't quote, unquote arrived," said president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson, citing two vintage '80s dynasties. "We don't see ourselves as the Lakers with Magic, Kareem and Worthy or the Celtics with Bird, McHale and Parish that had perennial runs for eight years and contended for championships every season.

"The field is a lot more even, and the competition is stronger now. We can't afford to rest on our laurels."

The off-season plan was to upgrade at three positions, if possible.

The Mavericks sought to improve depth at point guard. They wanted two swingmen who could bring defense, athleticism and playoff experience. They hoped to acquire a power forward to back up Dirk Nowitzki who could shoot and help them spread the floor. Adding an athletic big man project was part of the equation, too.
