Team Pacquiao hopes typhoon won’t disrupt training

Members of Manny Pacquiao’s training team will wait for Typhoon Juan’s power punch before they move.

“We are dealing with it when it gets here,” said trainer Freddie Roach of Juan (International name: Megi), a powerful typhoon expected to hit Northern Luzon on Monday.

Roach said Pacquiao, who is preparing for his November 13 showdown with Mexican Antonio Margarito, will not get a Sunday break and will continue training at the Shape Up Boxing gym in this mountain resort city.

Pacquiao said he will leave it to God to fight the typhoon. “Dasal tayo para sa magandang panahon. Walang imposible sa Diyos (We should pray for a good weather. Nothing is impossible with God),” he said.

Light rain fell in the summer capital on Saturday afternoon following a sunny morning.

On Saturday, Pacquiao sparred with Michael Medina and Glen Tapia for a total of nine rounds.

“It was an intense four rounds for me,” said Medina. “I have a feeling I won’t get the $1,000. He is a tough guy to knock down,” he said, referring to the prize money Roach offered to anyone who could knock Pacquiao out in his sparring sessions.

Medina said Team Pacquiao will likely stay in the city even with the looming typhoon. “We will still be here for a week,” he said.

In October last year, Team Pacquiao weathered Typhoon Pepeng, which isolated Baguio for at least three days due to massive landslides that blocked major routes to and from the city.

Pacquiao said his wife, Jinkee, and Top Rank chief Bob Arum arrived here on Saturday to visit his training camp.

“I am more inspired and sy’empre, excited sa laban,” Pacquiao said. Roach said Pacquiao will stop playing basketball as his training enters its final week here. “He’s getting better every day but he was better [on Friday],” he said.

As of this time, Signal Number 4 has been raised for Cagayan Valley and Isabela. It was upgraded because recent reports indicates that winds are now 225 kilometers per hour, with gustiness at 260 kph (from a previous 180 to gustiness at 220). This mofo is one very powerful engine of nature.

US military help offered on typhoon ‘Juan’

MANILA, Philippines – The United States military offered its help to the Philippines on Sunday in response to the impending onslaught of typhoon Juan.

US Army Colonel Kevin Clark, head of the Joint United States Military Advisory Group in the Philippines made the offer in a meeting with National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Undersecretary Benito Ramos Sunday afternoon.

Clark, Ramos, and other U.S. military officers discussed the possible assistance that the U.S. Navy can officer in the preparation for typhoon Juan's landfall Monday.

U.S. Navy and Marines troops are currently in the country for the joint Phiblex exercises, is an annual *****eral exercise designed to improve interoperability, increase readiness and continue professional relationships between the US and Philippine Armed Forces.

Clark said that they had to postpone the exercise because of the typhoon.

Ramos said that they had requested to the U.S. government the assistance and the use of 6 Chinook helicopters from the U.S. Navy's 6 Chinook helicopters in preparation for any rescue operations.

He added the 4 provinces in Cagayan Valley – Palanan, Dinapigue, Macunacun, and Divinacunan – could be seriously affected and could only be accessible by either sea or air.

He said that the Philippine Air Force only has 2 helicopters and they won't be enough in a rescue operation worse-case scenario.

Clark said meeting with Ramos was only a preliminary assessment on what assistance the US can offer.

The Philippine government had already sent a request for assistance to the US government.

Clark added that US troops will be just in the sidelines and let their Philippine counterparts do their job.
