China suspends five over brawl with Brazil

BEIJING — China's coach Bob Donewald Jr., manager and three players were suspended by the Chinese Basketball Association on Friday for the ugly on-court brawl with the Brazil team.

The association had earlier apologized for the melee that left Tuesday's game unfinished and one Chinese player in a neck brace.

Video footage and photos of the fighting zoomed around the Internet and worldwide TV news, tarnishing China's sporting image ahead of next month's Asian Games in the southern city of Guangzhou.

Donewald, a former NBA assistant with the New Orleans Hornets and Cleveland Cavaliers, apologized for the incident at a news conference on Friday and said players had been following his lead after he protested a foul call.

"The consequences of this event and the incident is severe," Donewald said. "Not only was it against the spirit of competition, our actions were also not worthy of the adulation of our fans and the well wishes of the entire country.

"We have brought shame and disappointment to this team, to our fans and to this nation. So on behalf of the national team, I offer our sincere apologies to everyone who supports and cares about us."

Donewald, the American who took charge of the China team six months ago, had been ejected for insulting officials shortly before the fighting started. He was suspended indefinitely, fined 50,000 yuan ($7,500), and given a formal demerit.

Similar punishments were dealt to manager Zhang Xiong, who was fined 30,000 yuan ($4,500), and players Ding Jinhui, Su Wei, and Zhu Fangyu, who were each fined 20,000 ($3,000).

The association on Wednesday said the team's preparations for the Asian Games were put on hold to give players time to "deeply reflect." All players have also been ordered to attend lessons on good sportsmanship.

Play became increasingly rough after Donewald was ejected in the opening minutes, then players started kicking and punching. The teams were separated, but China's players then attacked their opponents as the Brazilians were heading to the locker room.

Brazil refused to return to the court or play a scheduled fourth game in their series and both teams flew back to Beijing from the central city of Xuchang.

Tuesday's incident was just the latest instance of on-court fighting by China, whose players have been fined tens of thousands of dollars by the world and Asian federations for scrapping with opponents in past.

Star Chinese players Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets and Yi Jianlian of the Washington Wizards were not present at the game.

FIBA reiterates its condemnation of violence

BEIJING - FIBA, the International Basketball Federation has been informed by the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) about the violent incident during the friendly game between the men’s national teams of China and Brazil on Tuesday night in China's Central Henan province. Several players were involved in a brawl which took place on court and the game was stopped and abandoned.

FIBA condemns violence on and off the court and will always take all necessary steps to protect the good name of the game.

In the case of the game in China, FIBA has contacted the two national basketball federations involved in order to start an investigation on the case.

No statements on possible sanctions can be made at this stage, but the FIBA regulations allow for game suspensions for the involved parties and/or monetary fines.

FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann said: “We were instantly informed of the incident in China by the Chinese Basketball Association and we thank them for their swift action.

"We condemn violence and we are determined to fight it rigorously. Players and coaches are role models for youngsters and their peers. They should be aware of their responsibility and act accordingly at all times.”

“We fortunately do not have a problem with hooliganism”, Mr Baumann continued.

“But we need to be careful and need to take action for the proper conduct of players and coaches on the court, even more so during ‘friendly’ national team games.”

FIBA has increasingly taken a tough stance against violence and ruled with severity in a number of cases.

bro, i think FIBA has still jurisdiction on it. FIBA needs to suspend players from china or China itself. remember the player from croatia (kristic) he was suspended for 3 games during the world championship. they had a brawl against greece wc was also a friendly game.
