Jorge Gallent was a multi-titled coach in the amateurs and he’s confident he can keep his winning ways in the pros.
With his burning passion to compete and win Gallent is aching to also carve a niche in the PBA where he owns up to being challenged and motivated to show his worth.
"I’m just excited to compete. I’m motivated to beat them (rival PBA coaches)," said Gallent, the new B-MEG Derby Ace coach taking over from Ryan Gregorio.
He was beaten in his first PBA game by Talk N Text last Wednesday, but he has lost none of his confidence.
"It was just the first game and we’re still adjusting to many things. We’re also adapting to the new officiating philosophy," said Jorge, holder of a record six championships won in the same number of tournaments in the PBL.
He himself is in an adjustment stage.
"
There’s a big difference between coaching PBL players and coaching the pros. In the PBA, you don’t teach but more of motivate," said Gallent.
"
You tone down practices in the pros because you save their legs for a long season. Kung ano ang ipapagawa mo… you have to make them understand why. You have to explain why they’re doing this," Gallent added.
Gallent, who played college ball with FEU, looks up to coaches Tim Cone, Norman Black and Jong Uichico for what have they achieved in their coaching careers.
"Mahirap gawin yung mga nagawa nila," Gallent offered.
He, however, pointed to coaches Joe Lipa, Alfrancis Chua and Ryan Gregorio as those who have big influences in his coaching style.
He played under Lipa with Philips Sardines in the PBL, under Chua with Tanduay in the PBL and PBA and worked as assistant to Gregorio with Derby Ace.
"The good positive things na nakita ko sa kanila, ‘yun ang mga kinuha ko," said Gallent.
