    last OT:

@cholocoy: Don't get me wrong man. That card is very nice. It all depends on what you're looking for in a sound card. If you plan to have your AV receiver do the job and minimize the wiring you have to do then it's not for you. If on the other hand your using the analog baby jacks then by X-Fi's gonna do wonders. If I'm not mistaken, you're on Logitech Z5500s? I'd recommend using the optical spdif and the dts decoder that's built into it. Try checking this card out: http://www.atruereview.com/HDA_X_Plosion/index.php just set it to 5.1 instead and you're good to go.

one more note though.. EAX gamer fans.. it doesn't work that well for you guys. Disable that feature and rely on the surround sound by DTS or Dolby and you'll be fine.

Blabababalblaba I've jacked this thread enough. Sorry again blade. I've decided to stick withthis board and just grab the X_Plosion. thanks all.

so whats the real reason that a cheap onboard sound solution like soundstorm has Dolby live and the recent highend soundcards dont even support them ?

@ blade4638: how bout an Abit AT8 32X? best if you have an ATI GPU and you wanna crossfire down the road... 10.5k with Woody at TipidPC...
good price then, the one i can get right now has that kind of a price tag (14k)

but i dont really fancy SLI mobo's as im not going SLI and they overclock as good as any Nforce4-Ultra id rather spend more on a premium OCZ or Corsair modules that do 600Mhz

Only soundstorm had it as far as i know and lost it in Nforce 3 and Nforce 4.

Why high end cards don't support them? Cos it's expensive and not everyone really understands them enough to want or need them. Take you, for example, back when you were using the technology (i think i remember you being on a nf2ultra board) you didn't even realize it was there. So you didn't need or want it. The technology, like anything else in this world, also isn't free.

Sometimes, it's just not about what's cheap and what's highend. It's basically about what you need.

@Zerone_null: you're too kind hehehe! you took the words right off my mouth. soundstorm it is. and about my x2, i just want to play around with it a while before i overclock it. i've read its blazingly fast so i might not need to overclock anymore, but who knows. hehehe!

would it be asking for too much if i asked for a board for my x2 that has agp and soundstorm? hehehe! just pushing my luck...

btw, nice to have amd gurus here on the forums

and uh, i already ordered an asrock 939dual-sata2 from arctech today c",) c",) i'll be arriving this saturday according to Tess...

Hehe I'm planning to switch to an X2 too but so far I haven't even pushed my 3200+ yet. Maybe I'm just getting OC-lazy. I'd probaby do some mid-level OC on an X2 when i get it.

Weed had posted a board for the new Intel Proc that had the sweetest features. Makes me want to switch to Intel again just for those features unless Nvidia's Nforce comes up with new goodies right off the box.

hell i dont even have a DTS ready or any dobly capable system until now..

yes i was an nforce2 ultra user..

    Epox 8RDA+

well the Soundstorm was surely fantastic on this time, a free onboard sound besting the powers even compared to an Audigy 4 series.

what if they would release a new version of the soundstorm that kicks the X-fi's ass and its free onboard! now thats something of true value!

Playing Music. An analog cable must still be supplied to play non-digital content because the amplifier won't be receiving any digital signal.

Games. Again, if the content is not digital then the amplifier won't pick it up over the digital connection and an analog cabling solution must be done.

[ Dolby Digital Live enabled cards] (Or DTS Connect for that matter)

    Playing DVD. Same.

Music. Music is sent as an encoded digital signal to the amplifier for decoding and playback. No analog cables needed anymore.

Games. Again, non-DD sounds are still encoded with Dolby technology into a raw digital signal which is then decoded by the amplifier. No analog cables needed again.

lets see if i got it, if i play an mp3 and im connected to an amp with a coaxial or optical cable then i dont get the to hear any sounds right since the mp3 is not dolby digital encoded., with the dobly digital live i can hear the sounds coz the soundcard has that capability to transform the signals into digital , correct ?

Yeah. Though if I were listening to some of my high quality music (could care less about the mp3s) I'd turn off the DDL feature. It's better to just use SPDIF for better signal transmission. I don't know if motherboards/cards without DDL is able to support it but what i did before was i just disabled the DDL feature resulting in unadulterated sound.

    Music, i turn DDL off.
Movies w/ mp3 audio i turn DDL on.
Games w/ out Dolby Digital tracks, i turned DDL on.
Games w/ DD tracks, still had DDL on as it doesnt do anything to it since it's already a DD signal.
DVDs, still on for same reason as games w/ DD tracks.

So if you're into music only you're not missing anything.
