Solar looks for TV Network to take over PBA Coverage
Solar Sports is looking for a TV network that is willing to take over coverage of the PBA games in the next two conferences of the on-going 2010-2011 season following a reported decision by Solar TV to totally reformat its programming on RPN 9.
The Inquirer understands Solar TV is also planning to move the NBA and its boxing shows out of Channel 9 but whether or not these shows are also being offered to other networks is unclear at this time.
As far as the PBA is concerned the Inquirer has learned that Solar Sports is looking for a third party to take over the production of the coverage of the pro league’s games as well as to provide the airtime for the telecast of the games on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and out-of-town games on Saturdays.
Solar Sports executives headed by CEO Peter Chanliong are expected to hold discussions with ABS-CBN on Thursday followed by meetings with GMA 7 and ABC 5.
However, the Lopez broadcast network which currently telecasts both the UAAP and NCAA games in unlikely to enter into any agreement to assume the coverage for the remaining two PBA conferences under the Solar Sports franchise unless Solar also turns over its optional rights at the end of the current franchise to ABS-CBN.
The Lopez network, upset at having been turned down at the last minute in previous negotiations because of the offer of a slightly higher franchise fee without consideration for the value of ABS-CBN'S nationwide reach and the pre-eminence of the network and its multiple platforms, is unlikely to accept a takeover unless the PBA board of governors guarantees ABS-CBN a longer term contract which would make an investment in the pro league coverage viable and worthwhile.
PBA Commissioner, Atty. Chito Salud told the Inquirer “no formal notice has been received by the PBA office regarding this matter.” Salud added "that in any event the primary concern of the board is to make sure that the PBA games will continue to be aired for the rest of the contract of Solar .”
The franchise fee for the 2010-2011 season amounts to P170 million payable over a ten month period. Solar TV has accepted its responsiblity for payment of the franchise fee which is covered by a Letter of Credit. Should Solar fail to comply with their financial obligations to the PBA the pro league can draw on the LC.

Solar, ABS-CBN mull PBA coverage partnership
MANILA, Philippines – Top officials of Solar Sports and ABS-CBN sat down in a meeting today to discuss the possibility of a tie-up for the coverage of PBA games in the next two conferences of the ongoing 2010-2011 season.
Solar Sports intends to offer the same proposition to GMA-7 and ABC-5 since Solar TV, in partnership with Solar Entertainment Corp., plans to reformat its programming on RPN 9., shifting its focus on news and current affairs.
Solar TV has hired the services of Jing Magsaysay to lead them in the direction they plan to pursue.
“We’re not giving up the PBA coverage. We’re only looking for a TV network where we can transfer the airing. If we can’t strike a deal, then we’ll continue to air PBA games over RPN 9,” said Nitoy Nocos, Solar Sports vice president for marketing.
Nocos, together with Solar chief operating officer Peter Chianglong, have met with ABS-CBN’s Peter Musngi.
“They showed some interest but, of course, they have to bring it up to the Lopezes,” said Nocos.
The Solar Sports executive said they have informed the PBA of their plan through commissioner Chito Salud whom they met Tuesday.
“We have to stress that we’re not giving up the PBA coverage. We’re bound by a contract to cover PBA games until the end of the current season,” said Nocos.
Up in the air is whether Solar Sports will seek a contract extension deal with the PBA.
“We’ve yet to discuss whether it’s a go or a no. At the moment, we’re brainstorming on where we can transfer the airing of the games,” said Nocos.
The franchise fee for the 2010-11 season amounts to P170 million.
By the end of the season, the PBA would have earned around half a billion from Solar Sports from 2008-2011.
