(UPDATE) UNFAZED by Malacañang's assertion that Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is the legitimate President, opposition lawmakers at the House of Representatives claimed Thursday that preparations for the new impeachment complaint were “in full swing” and that they had enough testimonial or documentary evidence.

“ As far as we're concerned, our preparations are in full swing,” said Congressman Gilbert Remulla, spokesman for the impeachment team, as he dismissed Arroyo lawyer Romulo Macalintal’s claim that the battle to oust the President was over.

“It's to be expected from Attorney Macalintal to obfuscate. It's his job,” Remulla said in a text message Thursday.

Earlier in the day, Iloilo Representative Rolex Suplico, a member of the impeachment team, said no amount of discouragement could stop them from filing a new complaint immediately after the one-year-ban lapses on June 26.

"We feel we have enough evidence either testimonial or documentary to push for the impeachment of the President. We have the necessary evidence to nail the President," Suplico said in a telephone interview.

Macalintal said on Wednesday that Arroyo's legitimacy could no longer be questioned by her critics when the result of the election protest filed by defeated vice presidential candidate Loren Legarda comes out.

Alleged cheating in the 2004 election is among the grounds for filing a new complaint by the House minority.

Except for their regular meetings during the congressional break, Suplico did not provide more details following the opposition's self-imposed news blackout.

"It's too premature to enumerate our allegations and documents because we really don’t want Malacañang to telegraph our moves," he said.

But Suplico said Macalintal should be thankful to the opposition for giving him a "livelihood" every time they try impeach the President.

"He [Macalintal] should be thankful to us because we're giving him a livelihood," he said.

"He appeared to be discouraging us but the truth is [that] he wants us to push through [with the complaint] because as a lawyer, he lives by cases," he said.

Macalintal said that 98 percent of the total ballots under question from the province of Cebu had been recounted by the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) and that these did not show "any significant findings that could materially affect the results of the said election."

Although the recount of the ballots stemmed from a petition filed by Legarda, who ran against Vice President Noli de Castro, Macalintal said the tally would also determine the votes for president since the ballot and the election returns for president and vice president were the same.

"It is now safe to finally terminate and put an end to this issue of legitimacy or illegitimacy of President Arroyo's proclamation," he said at a press conference in Malacañang.

Do you think impeachment is the best solution right now for our economy? This is just a waste of my hard earned tax money.
An impeachment is never a solution to an economy... just like a rape case of a father to a family who is the only person who give his family daily bread.

But they are accused of breaking the law... so let's see if they are indeed guilty of the crime.

Lets say GMA will get impeached, In my opinion the same thing will happen to the successor no matter how good his/her leadership is because oppositions/people will always find fault, this will become a cycle in our country. We will become a banana republic wherein it will show how politically immature our government is.
And let's say also GMA will not be impeached... will you guarantee me that people will not have to leave this country? and no family will ever miss this father and mother?
Bisan asa pa ka nga lugara bai... oppossition will always find administration's fault. An contrary to what you say... a strong opposition is a good sign of politically mature government.

The impeachment complaint being readied by the opposition will never prosper if they don't have the numbers. Last year, they don't have the required numbers of votes as constitutionally mandated.

Just like last year, the needed numbers are still being sought. The lack of the number of votes required will only make their impeachment complaint ready to be trashed in the recycle bin once again.
