MANILA (Updated 2:07 p.m.) -- President Benigno Aquino III on Friday took full responsibility for what happened during the August 23 hostage crisis that killed eight tourists.
"At the end of the day, I am responsible for everything that has transpired," Aquino said at a press conference at Convergys San Lazaro in Sta. Cruz, Manila where he was invited as guest of honor.
He owned up the blame when asked by reporters about Senator Francis Escudero's remarks that Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo might have a hard time getting confirmation from the Commission on Appointments (CA).
Robredo has been hit by several lawmakers for the way he handled the 11-hour bus siege commandeered by dismissed police officer Rolando Mendoza that left five Hong Kong residents and three Canadians dead.
The lawmakers said Robredo should submit his resignation, or the President should fire him for supposedly mishandling the crisis.
Backing his men, Aquino is confident Robredo will be able to explain himself before the CA.
He said he has direct supervision over the Philippine National Police (PNP) because he assigned Robredo to concentrate on other matters at that time of the hostage crisis.
"There's so many things that have to be tackled by that agency (DILG)...I asked them to concentrate on that and I would retain for an interim, 'yung control over the PNP," he said.
Aquino said he still has direct supervision of the PNP as of this posting Friday.
President Aquino ordered a thorough investigation on the hostage incident and tasked Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and Robredo to spearhead the probe.
The Incident Investigation and Review Committee (IIRC) chaired by de Lima and co-chaired by Robredo started the fact-finding investigation on the hostage incident Friday.
Also present were the IIRC members Teresita Ang-See, representing the Filipino-Chinese community; Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) president Herman Basbano, representing the media; and Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) and governor for Eastern Mindanao Roan Libarios, representing the legal community.
Police investigators from Hong Kong also attended the proceedings at the Department of Justice as observers.
