(Disclaimer: Didn't read this thread from the start, sorry if my post ends up redundant or etc)

I understand where you're coming from. I'm sure almost everyone in the country feels bad about this situation and everyone wants to give his/her 2 cents on how the whole thing should've been handled, as in your case where you think it would've been justified to disregard human rights and shoot the guy as soon as there was a clear shot. But I would like to disagree with you. First of all, I'm not even sure there really was a directive to respect his human rights. If there was, then we're lucky to have a leader who does not think that pulling the trigger is always the best option. Obviously, things didn't turn out very well, with a number of the tourists and Mendoza himself getting killed. Yes, the PNP's ineptitude was embarrassingly showcased yesterday, it was very well-documented by our media who seemed hell-bent to supposedly do their jobs the best they could to the point of self-incrimination. But despite all those wrongs committed yesterday, I have to say the part where they tried negotiating with the hostage-taker (in contrast to your suggestion/implication that the guy should've been eliminated as soon as there was daylight to shoot) was not one of them. Had they done a better job with the negotiations, it's possible that things wouldn't have ended up the way they did. I'm not in anyway trying to put the PNP (or whoever it was who gave the orders) on a pedestal. It's possible that they only resorted to negotiations because they didn't know what other action to take, but I'd like to believe that they knew what they were doing and were really trying to prevent any bloodshed. It's very easy to say "patayin na kasi ang anak ng siopao na yan", but what if that guy happened to be your dad/brother/friend etc? What if it was really true that he was set up? Yes his idea of taking a bus of tourists hostage was (outrageously) stupid and can never be justified no matter how harsh he thought his punishment to be, but it's not hard to fathom that he'd resort to such an action because almost all of his windows of opportunity were slammed shut. Dismissal from service, banned from working in any other government office, retirement benefits cancelled. I mean, given that punishment, he could've thought of something even worse! He admitted as much yesterday, saying maybe it was better if he just ended his life because there was nothing left for him to do unless he'd be reinstated. I'm not putting Mendoza on a pedestal either, but let's try to analyze both sides of the coin here. He was desperate, and desperate men do desperate things. Although he had already been sentenced as guilty, I'd like to think that the phrase "innocent until proven guilty" is still applicable to him. He was asking for a review of his case, after all, so in legal parlance, this well could've still been an appeal period. They should've given in to the demands, if only to save the lives of the hostages. Hell, they could've just played along and once the hostages were in the clear they could've pacified him or subdued him, and then give him a chance to rebut the charges against him. Wouldn't you rather have that instead of the Texas shoot-out that happened yesterday? Or would you really rather prefer to "disregard his human rights" and compel him to start killing the hostages and ultimately get to shoot his brains out? I'm not generalizing, and everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but it's ironic that we hear and see all these people saying, "Oh this is terrible, I feel so sad for the victims, this shouldn't have happened, the situation could've been handled in more peaceful means" but also hear them saying "Sos gi-pusil pa lang unta dayon to si Mendoza, ya-ya kaayo ning pulis/SWAT way ayo, angay gyud to patyon si Mendoza!" You get my drift? Human rights are supposed to be equitable. You guys are free to disagree and argue with my views, but you know, maybe you should also try to think about what I said. And anyway, none of this never-ending bashing of our police force and government braintrust is going to do anything to make the situation better, so why not try to take things from their perspective?
