Interesting thread. I thought I was just the one who is a victim of defective cables (no matter how sophisticated they are). This happened the night before XRIGS 2010.

About my case, I didn't have a burned wire or anything. I have a Gigabyte Odin Pro (550w) and it was the SATA power cable that was problematic. Those are the bundled wires that you get when you buy modular power supplies. This SATA power cable I had has been attached to my system for like a year already when suddenly my system stopped responding and all. It boots but it can't detect my hard drive. I didn't know it was the SATA power cable that was the culprit that time.

So what I did, I checked the mobo, psu, nothing is wrong with them. Until I concluded that the hard drive is problematic. I tried salvaging important data on the hard drive from a different computer. I was able to back-up stuff but there was something weird. If my hard drive works in a different computer, then there must be something wrong with my PSU or mobo. I thought my PSU is broken or what considering its "Gigabyte", they're tough and stuff. So I tried switching the SATA power cable with a different one, and it worked!

I had a close look with the defective SATA power cable but nothing there tells me its burned or something. It makes me wonder why it just died itself.

Just an outlook to everyone out there, not all cables in your PC are sophisticated and fail-proof.
