    USC stuns SWU
By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated August 17, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (0)

CEBU, Philippines – The depleted University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors shocked the erratic Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, 72-56, even as the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters cruised to their fourth consecutive win at the expense of the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves, 88-77, last Sunday in the 10th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) season at the Cebu Coliseum.

In the high school match-ups, the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons devoured the USC Baby Warriors, 88-68, to improve their win-loss record to 3-1, while the UC Junior Webmasters escaped with a 69-67 win over the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars.

Reliable shooter Michael Cantonao scored 16 points and ace slotman Joven Cid Cortes added 13 points as the Warriors, who outrebounded the Cobras, 44-21, are now tied with their victims with identical 2-2 win-loss records.

Guard Nilton John Otida had 12 points and Sam Hermosa added 10 for the Warriors, whose great defensive effort caused the Cobras into a horrible outside shooting and their great rebounding denied the latter any second-chance points.

The Warriors also spoiled the return of two Cobras’ big men Clifford Maguate and Ritchie Jalandoni, who just combined for 16 points. Compounding the Cobras’ woes was the absence of top pointguard Arrd Diango, who is still recuperating from a left shoulder injury.

Only Eleazar Armecin registered double figures for the Cobras with 18 points.

With time winding down in the fourth period, the Warriors started hitting well contrary to the Cobras, who were in the thick of the fight only in the first half where they trailed by just three at halftime, 27-30.

In the other game, Junemar Fajardo charted 17 points as the Webmasters stretched their unbeaten streak to four. Gerald Ampoon finished with 15 points, while Kelvin Juliane and rookie Erden Glen Magallanes scored 12 points apiece.

The 1-3 Greywolves were led by Clarito Hernando Jr. followed by Jefford Aldave with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Benjamin James Zosa paced the Dragons with 21 points, while Francis Dave Guardario had 20 points for the Baby Warriors.

The Junior Webmasters were led by Alvin Labolabo Jr. with 15 points, while the winless Baby Jaguars were topscored by Julius de la Cerna Jr. with a game-high 25 points. (FREEMAN)

    USC beats SWU

    Monday, August 16, 2010

    By Rommel C. Manlosa

THE University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors may have mastered the art of playing handicapped as they beat the Southwestern University Cobras, 73-65, in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. at the Cebu Coliseum last Sunday.

The Warriors played with only eight men to SWU’s 15.

The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters also scored another win, this time against the Don Bosco Technological College (DBTC) Greywolves, 88-77, last Sunday.

USC’s win was its second in four games and the Warriors are now tied with the Cobras in the standing. UC, on the other hand, is still undefeated in four games, while DBTC is now 1-2.

The Warriors played a well-oiled game and did not give the Cobras a chance to rest as they continued to pound the taller opponents from start to finish, forcing them to commit 21 turnovers.

What was surprising was the control of the Warriors in rebounds, 44-21, which denied the Cobras second chance points.

USC broke from a 21-all with a 9-3 binge for a 30-24 margin at the halftime then started a 13-5 run in the third to post a double-digit lead at 43-29.

The Cobras managed to get close in the fourth quarter from Gil Wagas and Ritchie Jalandoni’s baskets for a 51-45 count but it was the closest they could manage.

June Michael Cantonao topscored for USC with 16, Joven Cid Cortes added 13, while Nilton John Otida contributed 12.

Eleazar Armecin scored a game high 18 points for the Cobras.

UC juniors thrash DBTC by 58 points
By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated August 18, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (0)

CEBU, Philippines - The University of Cebu (UC) Junior Webmasters went unstoppable all throughout the game en route to come up with a 106-48 massacre of the smaller and disorganized Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves in the lone secondary match of the 10th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) season last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

    Games tomorrow (Cebu Coliseum)
4:30 pm CEC vs. UC (jrs.)
6 pm CIT vs. USC (srs.)

The Webmasters, thus, created a three-way logjam at first place with the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers and the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons with similar 3-1 win-loss records.
The three-way tie could only last until tomorrow though as the Webmasters and the Dragons clash head-on in a highly-anticipated showdown of strong title contenders.

John Raphael Aranas and Alvin Labolabo, Jr. spearheaded UC’s dreaded offense with 20 and 19 points, respectively. Their ceaseless trapping defense forced the Junior Greywolves to commit several turnovers as they could hardly cross the ball to the midcourt, a deplorable sight familiar only last year in all games by the Dragons.

This year, it looked like the Greywolves, who are still winless in three games, are the whipping boys of the 10-year-old league.

Nico Nemeño added 13 points, while Adamme Talisic and Jeric Gel Yburan had 12 points each for the Webmasters, whose largest lead stood at 51 points, 94-43, with only three minutes left in the contest.

Only Jose Marlo Pono finished in double figures for the Greywolves with 10 points.

    The scores
    UC (106) - Aranas 20, Labolabo 19, Nemeño 13, Talisic 12, Yburan 12, Otida 8, Pua 7, Ortega 5, Legaspi 3, Culnago 2, Rodrigo 2, Comendador 1
    DBTC (4 - Pono 10, Belangel 9, Elizondo 6, Carbon 4, Mellijor 3, Yao 3, Ruiz 3, Gelasque 3, Tabasa 2, Icot 2, Castro 2, Haben 1 Halftime: 52-36 (FREEMAN)
