Default Behind the scenes, the making...

Here's my finished entry! > The Philippine 24 Hour Comic Book Challenge: Tatong Jurolan
Take time to read, this is like the making of it.

It was a good experience, I mean really good! My fingers are sore and throbbing till the next day. kapoy kaayo sige nudnud sa lapis. well the text bubble/boxes weren't in a good quality basta ra gidaplak, some typo errors, quite messy flows I think but all in all I'm satisfied I've done something like that.

Around 9:00 am (I'm quite sure I've received the theme on email around 8:30 I dunno) I was baffled with the theme and not quite as I really expected as in totally the opposite! when I open the email the words flashed at me giving me mixed emotions... Kataw-onon kaayo ko nga murag kahilakon, WTF, had me saying "I'm F**KED , I'm in deep sh!+!!". The theme was "Bakit Astig Ang Pinoy?" it felt like a theme from a high school essay writing contest I should say its a clever theme, I don't have something about mentioning the level, actually because it is on something about being nationalistic, patriotic, etc. that it reminds me of social science subjects /sibika at kultura which reminds me of highschool. that is why its hard to came up with an Idea to transcend it into comics which I or We always have the Idea that It should be a story, I was stuck with that Idea.

It was around 9:30 when I started grinding on the pencils. with no idea on whats the story would really be, I would say the first five pages were random scenes a cliche I guess in some introduction where the protagonist is beaten after "trying" to defending someone or something. I even asked my Mom and a close friend about the theme through text. they gave me the usual answer I had in mind but it was pin point to the theme, things like not giving up, adaptive, etc. but it was a big help.

1:00-5:00 the next pages were some casual talking, actually I don't really have a script in mind for the whole comics at all. I usually do this on some OCTs (Original Character Tournament) back in DA no scripts just scenes drawn indicating that he/she had to say something on this part. On page 9 I couldn't help to insert some fantasy stuff like Hallelujah Mountains rip-off, the idea actually was borrowed from the first gundam animation about colonies separating the class of people from the surface and of the above. that kinda gave me a hint to what the main plot should actually be. In page 9 I decided to move away from the scene, my usual move was to introduce another character, the antagonist perhaps, like most of the movies, comics Ive come to cross with... and a typical buaya anthromorph sprang out my mind summoning his henchmen ... this happens when another friend of mine knew about the contest I'm into and want's pays a visit, the thing is I don't want to be disturbed by any other than my mom and brother, tig hatag ug snack ug tig tahal sa lapis. kasabut man pud sya, so in return I used him as a character reference for the henchmen and go back to page 7 and put a foot on the foreground indicating "someones been watching watching scenario". Page 11 and 12 are typical bad boss scenario.

Page 12 was a breakthrough, on the previous pages I was kinda teething on what main goal should the characters have, and I decided to pull off a "guarding an artifact/specimen" story... unintentionally influenced by Book of Eli, Children of Men, etc.. and not to mention that days before that I watched the Hayao Miyazaki's Nausica Valley of the wind trailer, I felt it influenced me on that. About the plant, at this time I had no idea in particular on what kind plant is that but it was like it's the last one and its synthetic which give the idea that a Professor should appear and conclude/gave me an addition to the story that the surface is a barren wasteland and not a steampunkish world which I had been brewing at the beginning because its easy to draw things by "bullsh**ng it" (the term I borrowed from Gerry Anguillan in his komikero.com when he mention drawing things which you yourself only knew on how it should look like) not like modern day scenario that you have to be forced to draw buildings and cars etc.

Page 14 just kinda popped out because i want to put the antagonist into action, a chase scene comes to mind which requires me to came up with a transportation... something that has Filipino written all over it... Jeepney, Motorela, Traisikad/Tricycle, kabaw powered chariot etc.. I choose the Jeepney because its easy to draw like you just have to put a box with wheels. Frome here the Taplod idea pops out, and a bunch of cargo being stuffed in and at the top and the driver character was actually me ("R.I.P. my long hair") I tried to pull that Gerry Anguilan "hey, baby" expression on the last panel. the video on his site made my whole family watched it and they were on crack cuz of it. hence the jeepney was labeled "Lakas Tama Ni Manong, the videos title"

Page 15-16 actually my little brother was browsing on the web for updates and other entries. and said that other entries were also featuring a jeepney. So I decided the antagonist appears to blow up the jeepney and thats it... the scenes was like i was on crack or something, well it was because I was already making fun of my friend i mentioned before and I want some action.

Page 17- the Idea was simply "You can't run and You can't hide" and again I'm making fun of my friend playing as the antagonist with grenade on a slingshot as a weapon of choice ( the weapons idea was taken back from my drawings in high school) and to add things up the pig gets comical role or at least I tried. MUSIC!!!MUSIC!!!MUSIC!!! my little brother was on youtube on some cowboy beebop intro, I didn't see it but i know the music so I asked him to play Wasak na Wasak and Astro Cigarretes by Radioactive Sago Project the vibe helped me put up scenes like I'm on crack (just an expression) and I had to take a break from hours and hours of local DEATH METAL and HEAVY METAL/THRASH I believe it helped me speed up my penciling by the music's pace and I love it. I only eat brown bread and water for supper.

Page 18- to save time I just put a scene, a product of listening to Radioactive sago and cowboy bebop themesongs my brother played. and yes I tried to make the flipped-up jeepney look like a transformer and again the pig comes to mind and thus there was this scene.

I started to drink my secret weapon: Cobra Energy Drink, pag meron ka nito sulirap imo mata pag sumobra... my little brother passes me the coffe etc.

Page 19- the aftermath scenario... the long haired driver (me) looked so high XD I don't do drugs! I'm just a metal head and I got financial issues that I'm really motivated not to smoke because kuripot kaayo ko gaipon ko para sa guitar effects, etc... ug mantinar sa net connection LOL

Page 20- The usual sinister "The villain comes in" scenario, I enjoyed it, again because the character was based from my friend and I'm making fun of him. and smoke and black shadings made up the entire 24 pages, scene/panel fillers hehe...

Page 21- four pages left and I'm worried about the flow of the story, puros nalang gilatos nga mga eksena, I decided to pull out the villain by having him called by his boss. in early pages I had a scene popped out in my head that the boss should have that big pannel appearance like he reveals his self. same goes to most of the scenes they just came along as I go from page to page, thank God for that.

Page 22- My brother informed my friend that he was on the comics, and another friend of mine is asking him to tell me that he should appear too and the Professor that needs to appear was in here in an anthropomorphic figure of a kabaw, again to add something Filipino in it I think the barong was a fail LOL. this is where the plot/idea unfolds. the story I came up with around 1:00-5:00 was about two characters wanted to go on greener pastures as their goal, like OFWs? and pinoys who settle abroad like your relative in my case my surrogate mother and biological brothers whom I hadn't keep in contact with all these years thanks to facebook nakakumusta gyud ko sa ila pero it wasn't enough they are married and busy with their own families.

page 22-23 was the hardest, I don't know how to fit in the ending. it took me a while on these pages and decided to pull of a scene in which the protagonist explains to someone why they should not do/think such thing. like in anime cliches when the good guys almost at the brink of defeating the bad guy, the gang of good guys starting to do monologues on how wrong he/she/it was and he/she/it should be and will be defeated. it was around midnight and finished it around 2:00 am

Page 24 - actually this page was made before 22-23, a quite cheesy stuff but I don't want it to be obvious, holding hands in watering the plants... I forgot to put it up on the dialogues that the boy was older than the girl and putot lang sya haha.. My mom shouted out in the window while she was doing the laundry when the contest started "Buhata ug Love story!!!" asides from "Buhata ug bata ang character!" which I favored the most. speaking of the plant I decided (karon pa) that it should be sampaguita, again because it has Filipino written all over it.

    DIALOGUES, SCRIPT, TITLE:

one: I'm not good in titles and but average in giving names

Kalah was taken from a local place here in Malaybalay Bukidnon known as Kalasungay (Kala was farming one day and was being skewered by his karabao in the @$$, his neighbors yelled "si Kala gisungay" and that was it). its because I put Kalasungay on the last panel of page 7 just for laughs, you'll only get the joke if you live there. I don't want names like Pedro, Juan, Pablo etc. it sounds too hispanic.

Maya was random, she was based on another character I made up named Hickory grandchild of Cedar *named after trees and I have a whole bunch of em like Narra, Acacia,Oak, etc.( who is a childhood "acquaintance" of Taake, the grown up version of Kalah which is the basis of his character in my entry.

Crock Rezman the crocodile was taken from the all too familiar word Congressman e.g. "hubaga nimo oi" kung mu-deadman ang chick "Asus oi! wa tay pag-asa nimo kay kang Congressman ra imong bagsak" JOKE ONLY! haha

Prof. Kabaw suppose to be Prof. Karabaw/Kalabaw its too long and I want something Bisaya.

Script/ Dialogue- actually there was no written script to begin with, Its how I do pages in OCTs in Deviantart, just an idea or putting up a scene like *this is the panel where he/she/it should say something* and when I'm done I put/write them on the spot. its the fastest way I know. and i based most of it from my friends text message I received around 10:00 am "Astig ang pinoy dahil sa ugali nating di sumusuko. kilalatayo bilang maagap pagdatingsa mga bagay bagay. masipag din tayo dahil sa kailangan nating umusad sa pakikipagsapalaran lalo na sa kompitisyon ng mga banyaga. Di tulad ng ibang lahi, kilala din tayo sa pagiging sweet pagdating sa pag-ibig" XD thanks Harvs! yur di bess!!!

TITLE- Like I said, I'm not good with titles... or I wanted to making it sound cool to the point that I don't know which one to pick or whats it going to be. Sampaguita, because it was the last word mentioned on the last page XD

I finished the pencils around 2:30 am and My brother already scanned them up and allow photoshop to edit it automatically because I set it the other day on a timed drawing i did, but still I have to do some touches, and blackened portions that I marked X where they are too big to be covered by pencils, yes I used digital inking, and the dialogues on the last pages were my Ideas about getting Job abroad and leaving the country for good.
I was a volunteer in REACT for 5 years in my college days and we were asked to do shifts in the local rescue unit. this scenes angered me when we rescue stabbed drunkards, sideswipe/hit n run victims, and innocent victims MGA NABIRAHAN/NATRIPPINGAN to the local public hospital and OJT nursing students mostly handled the arrival and do/ask things like nataranta, aha ang mga parente ani? etc. some I don't want to talk about most of our rescue attempts I experienced ended up D.o.A. it gives me the idea that they were not here for to serve the hospital they just want do their requirements to go abroad and wipe some american @$$ (please don't get me wrong, I don't hate them or blame them. if only the government pays good attention on payrolls which is difficult, our government is being gang-banged by lots of problems already and one of my brother is a nurse abroad) I guess this fuels me up on the comicbook's theme, even my surrogate mother encourages me to take nursing even if I was just around grade school at that time.I took the approach of talking about the bad side, dirty politics/crab mentality made other people to go search for greater greener pastures abroad and leaving the country for good where we should be here and help fix the problems ourselves it's too idealistic and I don't even quite believe it my self but there are heroes out their doing things they can for it.

I actually finished all the pages around 7:15, My lil' brother uploads the stuff in my tatay's laptop from last page to the cover while I was still polishing in my rusty PC, I made the cover when I was busy figuring out what to do in page 22-23 and already done at 24. Our rule was plug the usb and pull it without clicking safety remove, plug and pull so I won't be bothered lol. my mode of operation was getting all the pencils done first, editing from 1 to 24, and putting the dialogues at 24 to 1, thus my brother uploaded 24 first cuz at this time I'm working backwards

thats all! my fingers still sore a bit... hinglakra na ang lapis hehe it was an awesome experience. Ironically, I don't have a finished comic book attempt before this... dili gakahuman, one of the reasons I joined this cuz I will have a finished opus.
