Default an old printer destroyed my Motherboard

hi peeps, such a bad weekend for me. i was looking for a second hand dot matrix printer coz mahal kaayo ang brand new. i found one from a friend, it was an epson Lx300 not used for many years. panahon pa sa pentium 1 ni gipalit. I tried it with my pc, it worked fine, even printed a test page. but when i turned off the pc, removed the printer, turned on the pc again,... no more display. tsk tsk tsk... i tried everything, reattached everything, changed cables, tested the power connectors from the power supply. still nothing. even realized that my cd drives will not power up if connected with an ide cable but if i remove the ide cable mu power up ra ang cd drives.

when i finally had the pc checked up, the technician said my motherboard suffered a short circuit. in my quest to save money, i lost money. huhuhu...

pero is this really possible that an old printer not used for a long time can damage a mobo?

Yes, it's very possible. I was a little luckier than you though.

My printer at the office used an LPT port. Everytime that damn dot matrix got plugged in my pc wouldn't start. But everytime the printer was taken out the pc would start with no problems at all. So what I did was plug the printer only AFTER the PC is on. I believed the plug was faulty but in extreme conditions it could short your mobo coz, after all, all circuits lead to it.

does that mean safer ang mga usb connected printers? what other precautions dagoy ato mabuhat so this can be avoided? aside from never trusting old not used printers.

not sure but it's still possible. faulty wirings somewhere somehow will spell disaster.

ka agi pud ko ana nga experience bai. imbis nagsave. nakadugo nuon ug kwarta. peace bai! it's a sign you need a new pc anyway.

but it's also possible bai nga na timingan lang ka. It may not be the printer's fault but you should have the technician look at the printer too. I think the mobo's metallic parts may have touched the pc case nya ni ground siya while you attached the printer.

wasn't actually planning on buying a new proc and mobo coz di paman kaayo daan ako pc setup bro, pentium 4 man ako gamit with 1gig ram, and 256mb vc, gaming purposes (altho i know daghan pa setup mas higher pa ani). ang printer ra muy daan, but not the pc.

    lesson learned nana

besides na short siguro to ang motherboard kay ang cable sa printer naa siguroy deperensya

sayang maka gasto naka ug new motherboard

anyways basta when it comes to pc ayaw gyud combine ang old peripherals with a new pc.... kay lahi mana ilang voltage sa mga old peripherals

dagko mana ilang operating voltage......nya imong motherboard new pa so new pud na iyang mga operating voltage

akong analysis ato..... ang imong printer gi hurot ug kaon ang voltage walay nabilin sa motherboard mao na matay

one question though... my pc with new mobo and proc is functioning. pero would there have been a possibility that aside from my mobo maapil pud ka damage ako uban hardware? gives chills to my spine if that could ever happen.
