woooooo cant wait!
Sylvester Stallone’s ‘The Expendables’ is one of this summer’s most eagerly awaited movies. Why? Well, the film, which was written and directed by Stallone, happens to feature the ‘Rocky’ star, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis in the same movie.
Yup, that’s right - the 80s’ biggest action stars together on screen for the first time.
But Arnie and Bruce aren’t the only heroes from the last three decades that Stallone has roped in for the movie, which sees him lead a ragtag band of mercenaries trying to overthrow an evil dictator.
We looked at the other guys flexing their muscles in ‘The Expendables’:
Jason Statham
One of the biggest action stars at the moment, Jason Statham starred in Guy Ritchie’s ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ before appearing in supporting roles (and sometimes just cameos) in a series of Hollywood films like ‘The Italian Job’ and ‘Collateral’.
He would then find a couple of franchises to call his own – the bonkers ‘Transporter’ and the even more bonkers ‘Crank’.
Jet Li
With a string of Chinese action epics to his name, Jet Li made his Hollywood debut in 1998’s ‘Lethal Weapon 4’. A leading role in ‘Romeo Must Die’ followed, as did several Hollywood blockbusters including ‘The One’ and ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’.
In 2002, he starred in the epic ‘Hero’ – which broke box office records in China at the time.
Dolph Lundgren
The last time Stallone and Lundgren were on screen together they were punching seven shades out of each other in ‘Rocky IV’.
His breakthrough role as Russian boxer Ivan Drago paved the way for films like ‘Masters of the Universe’ and ‘Universal Solider’.
A natural athlete (he was a professional weightlifter as well as a karate champion), Lundgren has brains to match his brawn, earning a masters degree in chemical engineering.
He still makes his fair share of action films, with them all heading straight to the DVD shelves.
Will ‘The Expendables’ change that?
Randy ‘The Natural‘ Couture
The Ultimate Fighting Champion has appeared in several films, including ‘Cradle 2 the Grave’, ‘The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior’ and ‘Redbelt’.
Dubbed ‘Captain America’ by fans, he has also been described as the Hulk Hogan of the UFC.
So expect to see a charismatic performance in ‘The Expendables’ then.
‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin
Best known as a hugely popular wrestler, Austin turned his hand to acting. Following a recurring role in ‘Nash Bridges’, he appeared on the big screen as a guard in Adam Sandler’s ‘The Longest Yard’.
A lead role in action B-Move ‘The Condemned’ followed, as did straight–to-DVD film ‘Damage’.
Mickey Rourke
The hugely gifted but troubled actor agreed to star in ‘The Expendables’ as a favour to Stallone for helping him begin his screen comeback in 2000’s ‘Get Carter’.
Despite his obvious acting talents, Rourke is no stranger to macho action blockbusters himself, having starred in many during the ‘90s, including ‘Double Team’ and ‘Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man’.
Gary Daniels
Gary Daniels is something of a martial arts B-movie star, appearing in over 50 films since his debut in 1988’s ‘The Secret of King Mahis Island’. Best known for his performance in cult favourite ‘Fist of the North Star’, you can see him next in a live action version of the hugely successful video game ‘Tekken’.
‘The Expendables’ is released on 19 August.
