imho, both go sideways. if maayo ka sa mathematics, dako chance maayo ka sa programming. if maayo ka sa programming, dako chance maayo ka sa mathematics.

and by programming i mean making your own code and not just modifying/copying code from the internet.

I think the important skill you get when you have a stable foundation in math is handling or creating algorithms, which is one of the fundamental skills in programming. Also, another side effect when you are good in math is you have pretty good memory. So it helps remembering all those variables, rules, processes or everything else you will need to remember. But for Object Oriented programming, the totally analytical will have problems. It will need both analysis and imagination. Most of you will remember that others are right-brain oriented (more on the creative side) and we have the left (more of logical side). Fortunately, we have the dual oriented people...like ehem....we have the best of both worlds... Our weakness is we are own enemies, meaning we absolutely conflict ourselves...so it will balance out everything...in the end we still think as fast as the one sided brains. No advantage in speed at all. Except for the geniuses...

Did you know that programming came from mathematics? lol
Sugod pa ni sa lambda calculus, the very first programming language. nagevolve ra na sya into functional programming(more like math) and imperative programming(have states that functional does not have). for definition naay wikipedia.

so for short answer sa "all good in math, are good in programming" is yes. basically programming is like mathematics.

long answer is it depends sa tao. as what the people said here. kay most people who is good in mathematics have a good logical thinking and have high analytical skills. in programming, you need to have logical thinking and analytical to write a good program.

"but not all good in programming are good in math". this thing depends. as what ive said na ang programming need ug logical thinking and analytical skills. so as nagprogramming ka naa ka ana which is require para makasabot ka sa mathematics.

HEHE. Ok in my case Ever since grade 1 up to i graduate in college Im slow with math. I miss out the Honor Roll cause my math is always pasang awa... Like 75. All other subjects I get the highest grades. Its sad that i dont become an honor student because of that. When I studied Computer Science, I loved Programming. Matter of fact I am the best in my batch. So there u go. Programming is more logic, analysis and basic computation. Math is not. I get sick when i see this axy - x+b === I was like? how the hell are u going to compute by adding Letters? When we have Statistics in college My teacher was amaze as I compute in my head the Deck of card questions and other Statistical Quiz. I dont even put my hands down as i seem to be able to solve all questions in my mind lol. When i was ask to solve it on the board I cant lol. They suspect I was cheating. So I challenge them to ask me a question and i will solve it. When I solve it I draw boxes and arrows showing them how i solve it in my head. Thats the only math Subject I Got a Flat 1 grade. But they dont understand how I do it.

maybe, in my opinion, you've engrave na lisod or d ka ganahan sa mathematics mao ng you got a bad performance sa math. I think ang imong gi galisodan sa math kay ang mga symbols used. dapat when you write an equation instead of writing the equation symbols, express the equation in english(or whatever language you prefer) sentence para dali ra ka interpret unsa na pasabot na ana na equation. you will see that mathematics is very simple. simpler than english language or other language.
you said that you like programming, programming is like doing mathematics. the very fundamental sa programming(in machine level when the source code is translated) it only performs MDAS(mul, div, add, sub) and some copy,move and basic ops. so basically you're doing mathematics.
Statistics is mathematics but deals of numerical data.

yes, agree. kay establish na ni sila and computer is stupid mao ng 1 and 0 lang nahibaw-an at mao nang discrete. . pero you can do programming without knowing these things. as long you have good analytical skills eventually you will arrive at their theory and prove it(reinventing the wheel, for your own achievement. this is good).

naa sab kay point giftlftr_23, i think overkill ra kaayo ang discrete math for basics in programming pero if you wanna get serious and dili ka mag reinvent sa wheel, why not study it, pero mas dakog kag learning if you prove/disprove one of their theories, mas mo tatak sa imo brain (anyway part sab ni sa course to investigate on that theory aka seatworks)

they are the most hardcore among us.

Do you think you dont need math to develop and improve the File system?
Do you those driver developers dont need math to display something on your monitor?

- embedded (firmware) developers which developed not only applications but all aspects of the device
Example: how do you decode and rotate the JPEG file in iPhone?

You think IPhone develoers does not need math to deliver the product?
You think iPod developers dont need math to decode MP3?

- Game/Graphics and Engine programmers. WHo writes games without math?
3D games require heavy trigo and physics.
Kanang mo gamit ra ug BUILTI-IN 3rd party engines kay layu ra na sa mga hardcores.

The best programmers uses math to achieve the best result. ordinary programmers like WEB application ones do not need them.

SO how do you define "good in programming" then?
