Hi Guys. I need help, below it the scenario/storyboard and my problem.

Im new to Linux and i got the latest release, the linux 10.04 aka lucid lynx. I just tried it last week. The installation step is not that friendly for me coz naanad nako sa windows, in lucid lynx, too many parameters to input. My current setup is 40Gb primary ext3, mount point at "/" and 40 logical ext3 mount point at "/home". I also noticed that you need to run scripts to install softwares not unless its a .deb extension...( sigh )

    1. After installation, i check everything out, i installed necessary updates through update manager.
    2. set resolution to 1024*768 under nvidia settings
    3. I installed pidgin ( IM ).
    4. i created a folder under documents and copy it into the desktop.
    5. I am able to change the wallpaper on desktop properties by right clicking the desktop

    Today, Monday
    1. After booting up my Linux, screen resolution back to 640*480 resolution
    2. My personal folder in desktop is not longer there
    3. i could not right click on my desktop
    4. clicking on show desktop at the lower left doesnt work
    5. re-copying ( using copy to command ) my folder under documents to desktop doesnt work.

    What i did.
    1. Under terminal i ran nvidia settings as gksudo. i type in gksudo nvidia-settings, after setting the changes, reboot. same prob.

Why so many manual settings to do in linux? sigh...

    help pls

una nimo buhaton is to test kung wala na ba nahabilin nga angayng install ang ubuntu like updates nga napending or mga wala nimo naalinggatan.

assuming gi dry run na nimo ang machine nga gibutangan og ubuntu og wala ka problema nga nakita during the live session.

    0. turn off the unit
    1. unplug any external hardwares - dvds, usb, webcam, external hd or wateber
    2. fsck -- check and repair file system lang
    3. then boot ka sa recovery mode og check the pending updates sudo apt-get -f install and
    sudo dpkg --configure -a
    4. kung ok wala problem during those tests boot na sa ubuntu desktop nya kung dili na mo hang usa-usaha og balik ang mga external hardwares then observe kung mo hang ba gihapon...

@turbomark, how do you do the fsck? sa terminal rana? how can i get into recovery mode?

naka bantay pud ko akong wireless mawala kalit, i need to restart it...sometimes more than 3 times para mubalik...

hehe...im not giving up but hope nai maka guide nako... hehe..

ubuntu linux (lucid lynx) user here. karon pako kadungog ini nga problem. ive been using ubuntu linux with several computers here pero wala man problema. very user friendly kaayo, mas user friendly kaysa recent microsoft operating system. nasulayan na nimo config sa GUI bai? pareha ra man sa dos ang terminal sa linux naa pod e memorize nga command codes, kung maanad ka, sayon nalang kaayo pod na pareha sa dos before naanad ko. pero sa GUI nalang pirmi pag configure para sayon, ayaw na atubang ana terminal unless needed(like the scripts of what you have said). wala nimo ma himoan og lain ang account og na logged in? basin dili nana administrator ang imo account or lower level account na.. check daw sa users option niya.

bro, ako na gi reformat karon, naa koi nabasa nga how to format ubuntu so follow ko iya steps...then can you give me some tips where i could start?

about sa user, akong gi create, kato ra inig pangayo nya ug user account...katong pinaka first gyud. As what i know, dili ni cya admin right and i need to type sudo in order to install something..sakto?

or is there a better step na pwde rako install dayon without touching the terminal? as what i know dapat .deb ang installer... and how do you install a .run installer? kay akong video card driver is .run extension

"about sa user, akong gi create, kato ra inig pangayo nya ug user account...katong pinaka first gyud. As what i know, dili ni cya admin right and i need to type sudo in order to install something..sakto?"

sakto ka ana bro. Ubuntu will also prompt for your password whenever you start a program that needs admin rights.

"or is there a better step na pwde rako install dayon without touching the terminal?"

Use Synaptic. You can find it in System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager. Dili ko sure sa exact menu location ha kay naka Linux Puppy na ko karon. Before you begin installing apps though you have to update its Software Sources aron updated pod ang iyang list sa available software. You can do this within Synaptic itself or by using System>Administration>Software Sources.

OR use Software Center. Mora ra ni sa Synaptic but with an improved and more systematic GUI. Still, you need to update your Software Sources.

"as what i know dapat .deb ang installer... and how do you install a .run installer? kay akong video card driver is .run extension"

It seems you downloaded the driver direct from the NVidia website. Naay instructions ana didto sa ilang website. You can see it sa "ADDITIONAL INFORMATION" tab sa download page. If I remember right, you need to type sudo sh <name of package> sa terminal.

However, you really do not need to download from the NVIdia site and manually install the driver yourself. Ubuntu has a manager which determines then downloads and installs the right video driver for you. It's in System>Administration>Hardware Drivers (again dili ko sure sa exact menu entry).

Lucid Lynx may have video problems such as this experienced here(Digital Life by Chin Wong -- Ubuntu Lucid ordeal) and echoed by others, me included (my video card is fx5500, and drops me to 640x480 after driver installation).

    Happy Ubuntu-ing, bro.

bro, wala man koy e hatag nga tip sa pag install sa Ubuntu OS kay sayon ra man gud, sama ra ga install ka og xp^^

you can change to administrator ang default account nimo para dili ka hasolan mag cge password2x.

asa ta ka download og previous version sa ubuntu? kay mao nalang ako gamiton cguro. ive checked ubuntu website pero murag wala man.. im using ubuntu with my low specs computers.

Dili man tanang nvidia video cards ang naay problema. Kanang FX5500 kay karaan na man na nga model. I also haven't tried Mint which is based on Ubuntu. Maybe they have this problem ironed out. Sulayi na lang ug search sa Ubuntu Forums regarding aron maseguro nimo ang mga cards nga maayo. As I said, I'm a Linux Puppy user na because of the speed.
