Sky Cable also bought Mactan Cable so they can operate in Mactan Island.
Cable OPerations is granted by CONGRESSIONAL PERMIT.
maayo makabalo mo nga ang mo hatag sa PERMIT dili ang NTC but CONGRESS. NTC has to endorse the APPLICATION, THUS NAG APPEAL ANG SKYCABLE NGA DILI HATAGAN UG ENDORSEMENT AND DESTINY.
DESTINY CABLE only bought/assumed the CONGRESSIONAL PERMIT OF Unicable TV which has been granted to operate in the Island of Mactan and the Province of Cebu with clear specific provision EXCEPT CEBU CITY. So they need to apply for a variance sa Congressional Permit to Operate.
Cable Operations is not that Lucrative since the high cost of operations for premium channel which is paid for by the cable operators to the Satellite Providers on a per subscriber basis and in $$$$ too.
It is impossible for small cable operators to survive with low subscriber base with high premium channels thus they were forced to sell their franchises.
I just had my subscription disconnected sa skycable Last week..... way pulos.
Hope DESTINY-Unicable TV can get the endorsement. This is a very stiff and difficult battle.![]()
in the cable business, the company with the most resources wins!!!
Its just how business works. cebu cable, moonsat and other cable companies sold their businesses because they were losing money.
We as consumers have the right to have options. Monopolizing the City means they are taking away our rights to choose. I seriously hate Sky Cable, their line up of channels are so messed up!!!! Katag kaayo!! If you notice ang channels sa destiny kay organize kaayo, ang mga movie channels kay naka linya, then followed by the childrens channel, then the lifestyle channels, then the news channels. Di pareho sa Sky nga mahurot ang battery sa remote sige tuplok.
Sakto high_heels. but you should also realize that Skycable has a monopoly because other cable players cant afford to compete with Skycable.
Monopoly means, that new players CANT/ AREN'T ALLOWED to enter the market. Cebu is an open market. Any cable company, with the right resources can easily enter the Cebu Cable Market. Cebu Cable tried. Moonsat tried. A lot of companies tried. But all the rest sold out to Skycable because they didn't have the resources to compete against Skycable.
A Good example of a Monopoly is PLDT in the 1980s. You want a phone, wait several years. We waited for 3 years+ to get out landline. Then cellular came. So we have Piltel and Extelcom coming in. Then Globe and Islacom came with their GSM. Smart was a late comer. Extelcom died. Globe bought Islacom. Smart bought PLDT and its subsidiary Piltel. And the requirement for all cellular companies is that they also put up landlines in their respective area. Globelines in Cebu is the evidence of that. The Sun has Digitel. I don't know where their area is.
So from one monolithic PLDT we have now a lot of players.
